Golf best bets: 2 long shots to target at the Wyndham Championship

The PGA Tour regular season comes to a close this week at the Wyndham Championship from Sedgefield Country Club. Long shots typically fare well here because driving distance isn't nearly as important as iron play and putting, so it's a perfect week to target a few under-the-radar players down the board.

Here are the two long shots we're targeting with outright and finishing position bets at the Wyndham Championship.

Webb Simpson (+11000 FanDuel)

If you like making golf bets based on course history, Simpson is your man this week.

Simpson grew up just over an hour away from Sedgefield Country Club, and his first PGA Tour win came at this golf course in 2011. He loves this tournament so much that he named his third daughter Wyndham. Need we say more?

Simpson missed the cut in his first career start at the Wyndham Championship in 2009. Here are his 13 finishes at Sedgefield since then (taking out his WD in 2022): T8, win, T22, T11, T5, T6, T72, solo third, T2, solo second, T3, T7, T5. That's a ridiculous track record of consistency at one golf course.

Simpson isn't playing well right now, but recent form never matters to him when he shows up at Sedgefield. He missed the cut three times in his five starts leading up to last year's Wyndham Championship and finished T5 anyway.

Top-10 finish: +900; Top-20 finish: +400

Justin Suh (+27000 FD)

There are two ways to score at Sedgefield Country Club. The main way is to have a great week with your short irons and consistently set up short birdie looks on the easy holes. The other, more unpredictable way is to have a red-hot putting week on these simple Bermuda greens, and that's how Suh can contend here.

Suh isn't a great iron player, but he's one of the best putters in the world. The American ranks fourth on the PGA Tour this season in strokes gained from putting and fifth in putting from 15-20 feet, which is where many of his birdie chances will likely come from this week. Suh is also playing his best golf of the season coming off a T19 at the 3M Open and a T11 at the Barracuda Championship. He's recorded seven straight rounds of 69 or better, including an 8-under 63 in the second round from Tahoe Mountain Club.

You need to make birdies in bunches to compete at Sedgefield, and Suh has been doing that consistently over his last two starts.

Top-20 finish: +700; Top-40 finish: +230
