McLaren Golf made headlines when they signed Justin Rose and Ian Poulter within just 24 hours. In a recent press conference, Rose explained how he was involved with the project from the start.

McLaren Golf aims to set a new equipment benchmark ahead of its official product launch.

“Yeah, no, it’s been, obviously, from my point of view, the news of the week, for sure. So McLaren Golf has been something that’s been on the back burner for a good number of months. Obviously, to launch a brand out of the ground has been going on for a lot longer than a year. It’s something I’ve been involved with from the outset, really helping the engineering team, really testing the very first editions of the club,” said Rose.

Rose is set to make a surprise change in his equipment with McLaren clubs. The Cadillac Championship in Miami will be the first event where Rose plays with a full set of the new irons. However, he will feature the same setup of woods and putter as before.

McLaren Golf is set to have its official product launch on April 29, and Rose, as their first global ambassador, will be present in Miami.

Rose said the Miami Grand Prix week was ideal for the launch, highlighted strong synergy, praised the feel of the clubs, noted his input in the irons, and said he is excited to use them for the rest of the season.

The Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix also takes place this week. Rose stated that he considers McLaren his F1 home team.

Rose also mentioned his excellent relationship with McLaren’s racing driver, Lando Norris, and the chief executive officer of McLaren Racing, Zak Brown. Both are “very keen golfers,” as Rose said.

Prior to this, Rose had signed with Honma, but the two parted ways after just over a year.

The Rose and Honma Partnership

The then World No. 1, Justin Rose, signed a multi-year equipment deal with Japanese manufacturer Honma at the start of 2019.

The deal started off with success. Rose won the Farmers Insurance Open in just his second start with the new clubs.

However, his form fell in 2020. Rose missed cuts, which was uncommon for a player of his consistency.

As a result, he soon ended his partnership with Honma.

Eventually, after being an equipment free agent for six years, Rose finally signed with McLaren Golf, taking an active role in its engineering process.
