World No.3 Matt Fitzpatrick came out on top at Hilton Head, winning the RBC Heritage. The Englishman’s poise at Hilton Head during a high-stakes playoff marked a significant career milestone and silenced his rival’s home gallery.
Fitzpatrick survived a late charge by this year’s Masters runner-up Scheffler as he finished with an overall score of 18-under par (266), followed by the sudden-death playoff.
“It didn’t get out of line in terms of no one was shouting on backswings or anything like that, which was great. I’m all for it. I love the people — they’re supporting Scottie; that’s great. You want golf to have an atmosphere in my opinion. I grew up watching football. I’m paid so much money to be out there in front of those crowds, having them chanting at you every week, it’s a great feeling,” said the RBC Heritage winner.
Matt Fitzpatrick was asked about his reaction to the crowds down the stretch at the RBC Heritage:

Fitzpatrick claimed his second RBC Heritage title and his second win of the 2026 season, having previously taken the Valspar Championship. He became just the fourth Englishman to win multiple times in a PGA Tour season after Justin Rose, Nick Faldo and Luke Donald.
“However, there’s no better feeling than coming out on top against that. There isn’t a better feeling.”
The Englishman hit a birdie on the first playoff hole after he rolled a 4-iron approach shot that landed within 13 feet. On the other hand, Scheffler missed the green.
The European star noted he has grown accustomed to winning in front of hostile rival galleries.
The two-time Masters Champion Scheffler came up short against Rory McIlroy at Augusta this year. At Hilton Head, he made a strong comeback but still finished second to Fitzpatrick.
“It’s nice always to get some support from the crowd,” he said.
“I thought they were pretty cordial in terms of cheering for me and not cheering against Fitzy, so I was definitely appreciative of that,” he added.
It was a late chase from him coming into the weekend. Scheffler closed off a three-stroke lead over the final four holes to force the playoff, eventually falling short to the Englishman.
Still chasing his 21st career victory, Scheffler will look forward to winning his second title of the season, after The American Express in January.
