'Miserable' Weather In Forecast For Third Round Of U.S. Open

Scottie Scheffler and the rest of the field for the U.S. Open knew Oakmont Country Club would be a difficult course this weekend. With the first two rounds in the books, it's safe to say they weren't kidding.

Sam Burns, J.J. Spaun and Viktor Hovland are the only golfers under par heading into the third round. Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm and a few other prominent names are technically in contention despite being over par and several strokes behind Burns.

Unfortunately for those who made the cut this weekend, Mother Nature plans on making Oakmont Country Club more challenging than it already is.

The forecast for the third round of the U.S. Open shows periodic showers along with a possible thunderstorm.

"Showers and thunderstorms pushed across southwest Pennsylvania during the evening and overnight hours dropping a grand total of 1.00" of rain. Ample cloud coverage today produces periods of additional showers this morning, particularly between 7 to 10 AM with a few embedded rumbles not out of the question. Our temps will limp into the mid to upper 70s this afternoon as shower activity limits daytime heating," the forecast states

"Current models indicate spotty showers and a few thunderstorms could develop throughout the afternoon thanks to the area of low pressure in the Ohio Valley. The hope is that we can settle into some gaps on the radar this afternoon, but like yesterday there will be some unfortunate spots that get heavier rains again today."

If thunderstorms show up at Oakmont, the U.S. Open will have no choice but to delay the third round. That might not be a bad thing for those looking to get into the red on the leaderboard.

Make no mistake though, Oakmont is going to show its teeth this weekend. We're just not sure who'll be the next victim.

The U.S. Open will be televised on USA Network and NBC this Saturday.
