Paige Spiranac is sticking up for Rory McIlroy as the five-time major champion continues to take criticism for not speaking with reporters.
McIlroy has developed a reputation over the years for being incredibly open during his media sessions, but that's changed lately. After winning the Masters in April, McIlroy's play has struggled, and he didn't speak with the media at all during the PGA Championship last month.
After ducking reporters following the first two rounds of this weekend's U.S. Open, McIlroy finally spoke on Saturday and basically admitted he's been frustrated with the entire process.
“It's more a frustration with you guys,” McIlroy said. "I don't know, I've been totally available for the last few years, and I'm not saying — maybe not you guys, but maybe more just the whole thing."
The 36-year-old PGA Tour star also admitted that his recent driver controversy and the way it was reported on played a role in his sudden iciness. When asked if he thought like he was within his rights to refuse to speak, McIlroy confirmed he felt that way.
“I feel like I’ve earned the right to do whatever I want to do, yeah,” he said.
After declining media after his first two rounds, Rory McIlroy spoke after his third round at the U.S. Open.

While many have been criticizing McIlroy for his stance, Spiranac took a different approach on X/Twitter Sunday.
"Might be an unpopular opinion here but he doesn’t have to talk to the media if he doesn’t want to. It’s not required. And why would he when everyone is always analyzing and criticizing his every move. There is clearly something more going on none of us are privy to so maybe let’s not all pile on," Spiranac wrote.
McIlroy entered Sunday at 10-over for the tournament, saying Saturday he felt he had been "pretty average."
"I was hoping to play better but I didn't," he conceded.
McIlroy can't win the U.S. Open, but he does have the opportunity to finish strong with a good round today. So far, he's one-under through 12 holes.
