Former Purdue golfer Adam Schenk has swung his way into prime position entering the final round of the of the CJ Cup Byron Nelson on Sunday. He sits in a tie for second place with 18 holes remaining.
Through the first three rounds at TPC Craig Ranch (Texas), Schenk has carded a 15-under-par, tied with Erik van Rooyen and Ricky Castillo. He trails 13-time PGA Tour winner Scottie Scheffler by eight strokes, who is 23-under-par so far.
Schenk is in the second-to-last pairing for Sunday's final round at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson. He tees off at 1:45 p.m. ET with coverage on CBS, ESPN-Plus and Golf Channel. The former Boiler is paired with Castillo.
Schenk got off to a hot start in Thursday's opening round, carding a 5-under-par 66 to begin the tournament. He had a streak of four consecutive birdies from holes No. 7-No. 10 in that round.
The former Purdue standout then notched a 4-under-par 67 in the second round, putting him at -9 for the event. He scored five birdies and just one bogey for the round.
Saturday, Schenk had his best outing of the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, finishing with a 65 to put him at 15-under-par for the tournament. He closed out the third round with seven birdies and a bogey, putting him in position to contend for a championship.
There's still a lot of work to be done, but Schenk is in an excellent position entering the final round. If he figures out a way to bypass Scheffler — one of the top players on the PGA Tour — it will be his first win as a member of the Tour. Schenk's only victory came on the Web.com Tour, winning the Lincoln Land Charity Championship in 2017.

With major championship season over, it's time to shift focus to the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in Old Bethpage, N.Y. Team USA captain Keegan Bradley still has tough decisions to make at the bottom of the roster, so the final two events in the regular season and FedEx Cup Playoffs will go a long way in determining the U.S. team. If captain's picks were due today, here's how we'd fill out the U.S. Ryder Cup team, which will compete against a team from Europe from Sept. 26-28. Team USA Ryder Cup predictions Automatic qualifiers: 1. Scottie Scheffler 2. Xander Schauffele 3. J.J. Spaun 4. Russell Henley 5. Bryson DeChambeau 6. Harris English These are the six players who hold automatic qualifying spots for Team USA. The top six players in the standings after the BMW Championship in August will qualify for the roster. Scheffler is the only player who's locked into a spot. Captain's picks 7. Justin Thomas: Thomas isn't coming in with much buzz considering he finished T34, cut, cut and T36 in the 2025 major championships, but let's not forget he has a win and three runner-up finishes this season. The 32-year-old ranks sixth on the PGA Tour this year in total strokes gained and second in birdie or better percentage, and he's having the best putting season of his career. With strong form and a career Ryder Cup record of 7-4-2, Thomas is close to a lock to make the team. 8. Collin Morikawa: Morikawa isn't as much of a lock as Thomas, but it'd be a surprise if he weren't at Bethpage Black in September. The two-time major champion ranks second on Tour this season in strokes gained from tee to green, and his elite iron play makes him a deadly partner in foursomes. 9. Keegan Bradley: The Americans probably didn't think they'd be in this situation when they named Bradley as the 2025 captain, but he's clearly one of the 12 best options as a player. The veteran has a win and eight more top-20 finishes this season, and he ranks fourth on Tour in strokes gained from tee to green. 10. Patrick Cantlay: Golf fans seem to think Cantlay doesn't deserve a spot on the 2025 Ryder Cup squad, but Bradley must give him a call in August. Cantlay's 15-6-1 combined record in the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup makes him a strong captain's pick. 11. Sam Burns: Here's where the decisions get dicey. These last two spots could go to anyone in a large group of about eight or nine players, but Burns has an advantage because Scheffler loves playing with him in team events. He's also in strong form with seven top-20 finishes in his past 10 starts. 12. Chris Gotterup: Gotterup found the perfect time to play the best golf of his career. The 26-year-old won the Genesis Scottish Open and finished solo third at the Open Championship, giving him 10 top-26 finishes in his past 11 starts. Gotterup crushes the ball off the tee and is on fire with his irons and putter, making him a great fit for Bethpage. If he finishes the season strong, Gotterup has a chance to crack the team. Just missed the cut: Ben Griffin, Maverick McNealy, Brian Harman, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed, Wyndham Clark
The Los Angeles Lakers are under immense pressure to at least contend for the NBA championship in the 2025-26 season. JJ Redick is now a second-year head coach, Luka Doncic has adjusted to his new surroundings, and LeBron James is one year closer to retirement. The Lakers’ front office has strengthened the roster since last season, despite the departure of Dorian Finney-Smith, with the signings of Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart in free agency. However, ESPN analyst Brian Windhorst thinks general manager Rob Pelinka desperately needs to complete one more deal this offseason. Brian Windhorst highlights the importance of Luka Doncic signing an extension Doncic seemed happy with the Dallas Mavericks and had no interest in switching teams, but that decision was taken out of his hands when GM Nico Harrison traded him to the LA Lakers. Even though he was proud to be a Laker and excited to team up with LeBron James, there was no guarantee that he would be willing to sign a contract extension. Well, it now appears likely that Doncic will re-sign with LA, which Windhorst thinks would make them “one of the biggest winners” this offseason. “I cannot overstate how much of a disadvantage it was for the Lakers to lose the ability to give Luka the supermax,” Windhorst said. “He is completely disincentivized to extend his contract this year. “The only reason he would want to is because he believes in the Lakers, a team he did not ask to be traded to. It would be another thing if he said, ‘Trade me to LA.’ “So, from the moment that the shock wore off that Luka was a Laker, I have been focused on whether he was going to sign, and the signs point to the signing. I am not going to dismiss that as an important moment. “I never thought it was a guarantee, even though the Lakers really tried to make it seem it was no big deal. I think it’s a big deal, and if it happens, I think the Lakers are one of the big winners of the entire NBA this summer.” Luka Doncic is under pressure to win the NBA title this season LeBron James and the LA Lakers organization already know what it feels like, but the immense pressure that Luka Doncic is about to be under will be a new experience for him. With no disrespect to the Dallas Mavericks, winning a championship is an aspiration rather than an expectation. Now, in Los Angeles, Doncic will be expected to follow in the footsteps of James, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, and Magic Johnson in adding another banner to the collection. Age of recent Finals MVP winners Plus, Doncic’s standing within the league will take a hit if he does not win a title soon. Besides Stephen Curry, who already had three rings, the most recent Finals MVP recipients were all 28 or under. Doncic turns 27 in February, so it’s about time he delivered in the postseason like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokic, and others have lately.
Dallas Cowboys' training camp practice No. 2 is in the books so let's cut to the chase on this one and get right into the biggest moments. From head coach Brian Schottenheimer cutting a fight short and threatening to kick out players to a tough injury scare, there's a lot to get to. A lot of Kenneth Murray with the starting lineup In many of the clips coming from Oxnard, California, free agent signing Kenneth Murray keeps popping up with the first-team defense. He certainly looks like a potential starter at linebacker, where Jack Sanborn and Marist Liufau are also competing for starting roles. Though Sanborn has been talked about as the middle linebacker, Brian Schottenheimer said Murray has also worn the green dot denoting a player with comms with the coaching staff. "What I’m finding, now that I’m getting to know (Murray. . .) is the leadership he possesses," Schottenheimer said Wednesday. "He’s a grown-ass man out there. He takes charge. He makes a lot of the checks, he’s very smart, and he’s wearing the green dot for us in a lot of the things we’re doing." Brian Schottenheimer threatens to kick out players from practice Safety Markquese Bell, cornerback Troy Pride, and tight end Tyler Neville got into a scrap early during team periods, and the Cowboys head coach took the opportunity to send a message to his players. According to ESPN's Todd Archer, "Brian Schottenheimer called the team together and read them the riot act, threatening to kick player out of practice with the next fight." In the clip below from Nick Harris (Forth Worth Star-Telegram), Schottenheimer is heard saying: "I don't know what happened, I don't give a (expletive)." George Pickens' injury scare George Pickens went down as he attempted to catch a target during practice. Reports from Oxnard indicated it was a cramp. Fortunately, Pickens appeared fine after practice as he finished the day on the catching machines and jogged off the field. Joe Milton's 'touch pass' to Brevyn Spann-Ford Everyone knows about Joe Milton's bazooka arm but what to stay around the NFL for a long while, he'll have to show better accuracy and touch than what he showed with the Tennessee Vols. Though he needs to do it many more times, one play turned heads at camp: A play-action shot to TE Brevyn Spann-Ford that flew over linebacker Buddy Johnson. Later in practice, Milton fired a deep shot that missed WR Jonathan Mingo. The arm talent is there—and it's one of the best in the league—he just needs the touch to come consistently.
The Chicago Blackhawks, a crowded goaltending situation and trade rumors involving the Edmonton Oilers have fans wondering if the Stars' rivals could soon upgrade their crease before training camp. With training camp approaching, Chicago general manager Kyle Davidson has five goalies under contract, including Spencer Knight, Arvid Soderblom, Drew Commesso, newly signed Stanislav Berezhnoy, and veteran Laurent Brossoit. Only two NHL roster spots are available, which has fueled speculation that Brossoit could be moved to a contender, with Edmonton emerging as a leading candidate. For Stars fans, seeing the Oilers potentially bolster their crease should raise eyebrows. Edmonton, fresh off a deep playoff run, is looking to avoid the same issues that hurt them late in the postseason. "The Blackhawks have too many goalies and not enough spots, and Brossoit's contract and experience make him a natural trade chip for a team like the Oilers."-Julien Trekker Chicago's goalie logjam and Berezhnoy's recent signing are detailed further at NHL.com. Dallas could see its rival upgrade as Blackhawks explore trading Laurent Brossoit Brossoit, 32, carries a $3.3 million cap hit for one more season. Drafted by Calgary in 2011, he's appeared in 140 NHL games, including time with Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Vegas, where he helped the Golden Knights win the Stanley Cup in 2023. While Chicago decides, Drew Commesso continues to push for NHL time after posting a .911 save percentage over 39 AHL games. For a deeper look at Commesso's performance, his full profile is on Elite Prospects. I think if Edmonton lands Brossoit or even Commesso, Dallas may have to plan around a deeper Oilers team come playoff time, especially given how tight the Western race looks on paper.
