For the better part of a decade, it was Bern Page’s responsibility to keep the best surfers in the world safe. The World Surf League’s Global Safety and Security Director, he was unflinching in his commitment to the well-being of the sport’s brightest stars. Sadly, the WSL Page has passed away.
“His unwavering dedication helped set and sustain the highest standards across our competitions and events,” reads a post from the WSL. “His commitment to care, integrity, and professionalism left a profound mark not only on our organization but on everyone fortunate enough to work alongside him. Bern approached every challenge with humility and resolve.”
Overseeing details large and small, it was Page’s job to make sure that world champions made it from the water to the podium safely. He played a vital role in managing the massive crowds in Brazil, as well as making sure the athletes under his care made it safely from one corner of the world to the next. And when the pandemic put the world on hold, he was among those that helped the Championship Tour grind back into gear in a safe and secure manor.
Handling his job with the utmost seriousness and integrity, Page was also gracious, kind, and a dear friend to so many in and around the WSL universe. He was always happy to share a smile, had a quick wit, and general ease in his character when he wasn’t on duty.
The outpouring of love for Page was immediate as comments poured in on Instagram. From newly minted world champ Yago Dora, to rising star Erin Brooks, and all those friends he made along the way, the amount of respect for the man has been universal and profound.
Details surrounding Page’s passing are limited at this time. We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
Our deepest condolences to Page’s family and friends during this tragic time.
