Scottie Scheffler arrived at Oakmont Country Club this week expecting to contend, but the U.S. Open layout has proved far more punishing than he’d anticipated. After an opening 73 and a follow‑up 71, Scheffler carded an even‑par 70 in Saturday’s third round, leaving him at 4‑over‑par through 54 holes and firmly off the pace, eight shots behind leader Sam Burns.
The world No. 1 admitted, “Am I in the position I had hoped to be after three days? Obviously not,” highlighting just how tough Oakmont’s rough and lightning‑fast greens have been this week.
Amid moving day, television cameras captured a tender scene on the driving range. Scheffler and his son Bennett shared some heartwarming moments. The infant reached for a club, mimicked a swing from his seated spot, and drew laughter from onlookers as commentators marveled at his “stance” and “follow‑through.”
Posting this moment on social media, PGA Tour had no words except a simple red heart "❤️".
Off the course, Scheffler’s family remains his bedrock. He and Meredith Scudder, high‑school sweethearts who married in December 2020, welcomed Bennett in May 2024.
Scheffler also shares a good relationship with the solo leader, Sam Burns. When the two recently shared a rental house, Burns told Golf.com, “It’s a lot more fun now coming home to the boys and just kind of hanging out with them and playing with them and watching them, it’s great entertainment.”
"Scottie's obviously an incredible player," Burns said during an interview at the U.S. Open. "I don't think I need to say that (laughing). But I think we obviously spend a lot of time together and being able to talk to him and just kind of learn from him and ask him questions, it's been really cool."
