Rory McIlroy captured his second Irish Open title at The K Club on Sunday, offering a strong reminder of his form heading into the Ryder Cup later this month.
McIlroy has a knack for pulling off remarkable shots when they matter most, and the 30-foot eagle putt he drained on his final hole was just the latest example.
After lifting the trophy, McIlroy spoke about how his performance reinforced his reputation as one of the game’s best finishers in pressure situations.

But standing on the 18th tee, needing an eagle to force a playoff with Joakim Lagergren, even he might have felt victory was slipping away.
The Masters champion stepped up and delivered, making eagle to tie Lagergren and send the tournament into extra holes. It felt almost routine for those watching at The K Club – just another big moment from a player who’s made a habit of them throughout his career.
He sealed it with a birdie on the third playoff hole to wrap up another win in front of home fans. But not everyone will be pleased by what comes next. During an interview after winning, McIlroy appeared to signal that LIV Golf is becoming more accepted within golf circles.
McIlroy had spoken about closing out tournaments before, but on Sunday, he showed once again that his words were backed up by action. Still, it wasn’t looking promising for much of the final round.
Lagergren finished at 11 under par after a closing 69 and held the clubhouse lead as McIlroy played the back nine. Even with his late charge, McIlroy needed something special on the final hole to pull even.
The K Club has long been a favourite among players and fans alike. The Arnold Palmer design is always in top condition and has some standout holes that add to its reputation.

Despite this, there’s a growing sentiment among fans that it’s time for the event to return to a links course. Social media has been filled with calls for future editions to be played on Ireland’s famous coastal tracks.
The tournament does have links roots. Venues like Royal County Down and Lahinch have hosted in the past, and many feel those settings better reflect Ireland’s golfing heritage.
After scenes like those witnessed around the 18th green following McIlroy’s eagle putt – reminiscent of peak Tiger Woods moments – organisers might be tempted to keep the event at The K Club longer than originally planned.

The energy around the final hole and through the playoff added another layer to an already memorable day. Crowds packed around every corner, creating an atmosphere more often seen at majors than regular tour events.
For now, plans are set. The Irish Open will return to Palmer North in 2027 after a stop at Palmer South in 2026. But with each passing year of success at The K Club, momentum continues building against change.
McIlroy’s victory on Sunday came just at the right time. He has not been himself on the PGA Tour over the past few months but his statement win at the Irish Open proved that he has his mojo back.
However, it wasn’t just his victory that was great news for Europe ahead of their attempt to wrestle back Ryder Cup control from Team USA later this month. The venue itself was also important.
