Rory McIlroy picked up a huge win on Sunday. The World No.2 came from behind and stunned Joakim Lagergren in a playoff round to claim the 2025 Irish Open title. Following the win, the golfer penned down a heartfelt message on social media.
Just a few weeks before the Ryder Cup, McIlroy was playing in his national open. Backed by the home fans at The K Club in Kildare, Ireland, the golfer needed to make an eagle on the 18th hole to tie Lagergren and force a playoff round.
The 2025 Masters Champion kept his composure and drained a huge 28-foot eagle putt to huge cheers from the crowd.

The two golfers, who finished the tournament with a score of 17-under par, went head-to-head in extra holes. After the first two playoff holes failed to separate them, Lagergren found the water on the third attempt. This allowed McIlroy to steer through. He would win with two putts and claimed his 2nd Irish Open title.

This is McIlroy’s 4th win of the year and his first since the famous triumph at the Masters Tournament in April. Out of his 4 wins, 3 of them have come through a playoff round.
Despite his best efforts this week, Joakim Lagergren ended up empty-handed. The Swedish golfer lost against Rory McIlroy on the third playoff hole and lost the chance to win the Irish Open against the crowd favorite.
After suffering a heartbreaking defeat, the 33-year-old expressed frustration regarding this loss. While speaking with the reporters, he claimed this setback was a tough one to swallow.
This is a tough one to swallow. I really thought I had that out there today. Obviously posting minus 17 going into the clubhouse, could might as well been enough. Played really good in the playoff as well. Hit a solid 5-iron down on the last play, but it got a horrendous bounce. It’s a metre from being dead to the hole. So it’s tough.
Joakim Lagergren said
There was a five-way tie for the lead on Sunday. Lagergren would break this tie on the back nine and finished the round with a 6-under 66 score. Unfortunately for him, this low round score was just not enough to see off McIlroy.
Rory McIlroy claimed his 20th DP World Tour title on Sunday as he edged out Joakim Lagregren in the playoff round at the Irish Open. After his win, a LIV Golfer sent a message to him.
This week, LIV Golf stars Tyrrell Hatton and Brooks Koepka were also competing in this event. While Koepka ended up missing the cut, Hatton finished T42 following a disappointing 5-over 77 score in the final round.
The English golfer would later take to his X account and speak on the atmosphere in Ireland. He would then congratulate the former World No.1 for his victory.
Always a great week in Ireland at the @IrishOpen_, the crowds & support was amazing all week. Congratulations @McIlroyRory on the win! Next stop the @BMWPGA!

Hatton and McIlroy, who will team up later this month at the Ryder Cup while representing Team Europe, will now feature in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in England this week. Several of their European Ryder Cup teammates are also in the field.
A triumph for any one of them could become a huge boost for the team for their upcoming showdown against Team USA at Bethpage Course in New York.
