The PGA Tour’s marquee rivalry is disappearing. Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler won’t share a field for six weeks between the Masters and the PGA Championship, and analysts believe it’s a problem.
“One problem the PGA Tour needs to solve: Three Signature Events between the Masters and the PGA Champ. ZERO featuring BOTH Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler,” Golf.com Sean Zak wrote.
“Hilton Head: Rory OUT, Scottie IN, Doral: Rory OUT, Scottie IN, Quail Hollow: Rory IN, Scottie OUT,” he pointed out on X on Sunday.
After winning his second consecutive Masters, the Northern Irishman skipped both Hilton Head and Doral, passing on two Signature Events and a combined $40 million purse to manage recovery.

Quail Hollow: Rory IN, Scottie OUT
He won’t return before the 2026 Truist Championship at Quail Hollow, where he has won four times before, before May (6 to 10).
Meanwhile, after finishing runner-up at the Masters, Scheffler jumped back in. He lost a sudden-death playoff to Matt Fitzpatrick at the 2026 Hilton Head.
Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler are among the PGA Tour’s biggest stars, and their absence in 20-million-dollar Signature events isn’t helping the PGA Tour’s growth.
“I sympathize w/ all parties here, and both of their individual schedules make a lot of sense, but that is decidedly not the best commercial product to bring to market (TV, sponsors, fans),” Sean Zak wrote in another post on Sunday.
The numbers back up Zak’s statement. Front Office Sports revealed that in 2025, Signature Events saw a 20% viewership bump over the 2024 season.
However, that growth has significantly slowed this year, with only the Arnold Palmer Invitational showing a 17.8% growth on NBC, as per Nielsen’s Big Data + Panel methodology.
Meanwhile, events like the Genesis Invitational and RBC Heritage have lost viewership on CBS. Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler’s split schedule won’t do those numbers any favors.
