Tommy Fleetwood won the 2025 Tour Championship, earning the FedEx Cup title as well.
The FedEx Cup has been around since 2007, when Tiger Woods was its first champion.
The format has changed multiple times over the years, with the PGA Tour still trying to find the perfect balance.
Rory McIlroy’s decision to skip the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis put extra pressure on the PGA Tour to consider a playoff overhaul in 2024.
The Tour was not thrilled about McIlroy missing that first event either, which added another layer to an already complex situation.
Still, no matter what changes are made to try and improve it, there will always be those who do not like it. Just look back at 2011 when Bill Haas came from nowhere to take home one of golf’s biggest non-major prizes.
Bill Haas, son of longtime PGA Tour figure Jay Haas, claimed the FedEx Cup title in 2011 after coming through the field to win the Tour Championship at East Lake.
The points system back then was similar to what we see now, where playoff events carry more weight and the Tour Championship winner also takes home the FedEx Cup.
His rounds of 68, 67, 69, and 68 left him eight under par for the week in Atlanta.
Most people remember him for his up-and-down out of the water during a playoff hole against Hunter Mahan at East Lake that year.
The Charlotte native has six PGA Tour wins and has played in three Presidents Cups for Team USA.
But over the past six years or so, it has been a real struggle for him. His last top-10 came back at John Deere Classic in July 2019 when he finished tied for tenth.
Haas has run into a number of issues on the PGA Tour over the last six years.
Here is how he has performed since that top-10 finish at the 2019 John Deere:
Results | Haas’ totals since last top-10 finish |
Events played | 102 |
Top-10s | 0 |
Top-25s | 7 |
Missed cuts | 57 |
He made just seven starts in 2025, so there is work to do if he hopes to turn things around next season.
The road back will not be easy, especially considering his recent stretch of results.
