Tiger Woods Left Golf World Buzzing During Final Round Weather Delay at 2025 U.S. Open

The 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club has been a fantastic spectacle, with the brutal conditions leading to highly entertaining golf from the best players in the world.

With Sam Burns leading Adam Scott by one stroke midway through the final round, a strong bout of rain came through Pittsburgh, though, leading to a lengthy weather delay and stopping play on the course.

That didn't stop golf fans from enjoying their Father's Day afternoon, though. In place of the live action, NBC decided to air highlights from the final two rounds of the 2008 U.S. Open, which was won by Tiger Woods at Torrey Pines while on a bum knee.

This was a great choice from NBC, as it led to the golf world on social media virtually live-tweeting the action from Tiger Woods as if it were playing out live.

"Dads taking their naps are going to be so surprised when they wake up and Tiger wins the U.S. Open," one fan said.

"People are just waking up from their Fathers' Day couch naps to witness Tiger Woods charging on the TV wondering if they just time-travelled," another fan said.

"Going straight to 13 at Torrey Pines for Tiger Woods' Saturday charge in 2008 is one of the better broadcasting moves i've ever seen," one person commented, commending NBC.

For those who aren't aware of how the 2008 U.S. Open finished — since the weather delay is likely to end before NBC can air it all — Woods and Rocco Mediate battled it out through the final round on Sunday, and went to an 18-hole playoff on Monday after Woods holed an iconic 12-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole of the tournament to force the playoff.

The playoff was a spectacle, with Mediate storming back from a three-stroke deficit on the back-nine to take a one-stroke lead going into the final hole. Again, Woods birdied the 18th, sending the playoff into a playoff. Tiger then parred the playoff hole to win the tournament.

The 2025 U.S. Open may not end up being quite as exciting as the tournament in 2008, but with the conditions of play and the intrigue at the top with guys like Burns, Scott, and Viktor Hovland in the hunt, the afternoon should be quite a bit of fun once play resumes.
