Wyndham Championship Preview
David Yeazell-USA TODAY Sports

As the Olympic Golf Tournament comes to a close, the PGA Tour now heads to Greensboro, North Carolina for the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club. The lack of a presence from top players like Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Xander Schauffele might lead many to not pay a lot of attention to the final event of the regular season, for players on the outside looking in on the FedEx Cup points list, there is a lot to play for this week, as those currently on the bubble to get inside the top 70 to qualify for the playoffs get one last chance to make a move. Here are some of the main storylines to follow heading into Thursday.

Jordan Spieth

One of the biggest storylines heading into the tournament has to be Jordan Spieth. 2024 has been a struggle for Spieth, as the 3 time major winner has gone winless, with six missed cuts on the season, two of which came at two of the biggest events of the season, the Players Championship, and the Masters. Spieth currently sits 63rd on the FedEx Cup points list, so a good performance in Greensboro would certainly provide him with some breathing room. With a weaker field in terms of talent (the highest ranked player in the field is 15th ranked Brian Harman), the Wyndham Championship should on paper provide Spieth with a good chance to gain some confidence heading into the playoffs. Another Spieth related storyline is that he must find a way back into the Top 50 of the FedEx Cup points list by seasons end if he wants to be exempt into all of the tour’s signature events next season. Overall, a lot is at stake for Jordan heading into this week, as it is quite literally the definition of a make or break tournament.

Players on the Outside Looking In

Notable players that currently sit just outside the top 70 on the FedEx Cup points list include Victor Perez (No. 71) who is fresh off a strong showing at the Olympics, the promising youngster Nicolai Højgaard (No. 80), and last years Arnold Palmer Invitational winner Kurt Kitayama (No. 74). These three, and others on the outside looking in to earn their ticket into the FedEx Cup Playoffs will look for a strong showing. With a less prominent field compared to other weeks, this is the perfect opportunity for a dark horse on the outside looking in to make a statement and pick up a huge end of season win.

The Golf Course

The Wyndham Championship will take place at Sedgefield Country Club as it has since 2008. A Donald Ross design measuring out at just over 7,100 yards. The course has often led to very low scores over the years, as 7 of the last 8 winners of the Wyndham have come at 20 under par or lower. We have also seen some historically low rounds fired at Sedgefield, most notably Brandt Snedeker’s 59 back in 2018.

Looking at these odds there is excellent value in players like Robert MacIntyre who has had a very strong 2024, as well as Jhonattan Vegas, not far removed from a victory at the 3M Open. If we look even further down the odds list, a couple incredible value picks would be Austin Eckroat at +11000, and Emiliano Grillo at +12000. It should be an exciting and consequential week of action in North Carolina!
