Wyndham Clark Is Accused of Destroying Lockers At Oakmont

It is no secret how brutal the Oakmont golf course can be.  This is the same course that has been almost boycotted in the past by PGA players.  This is the one that the players have been dreading all season, no matter how skilled they are.  Last year’s US Open champion, Bryson DeChambeau, missed the cut, and Rory McIlroy got so angry that he threw his club at one point.  These feelings are felt throughout the field, to the point that it was discovered one of the players took out his frustration on the lockers.  Currently, the prime suspect seems to be Wyndham Clark, who has a history of losing his cool in stressful situations this season.

Wyndham Clark Is Accused

He has done some damage previously this year.  During the PGA Championship, Clark threw his club in frustration, much like what McIlroy has done this week, and damaged a T-Mobile sign in the process as well as his club.  He has, of course, since apologised for that incident.  No word on the locker room damages.  However, it is still unclear if it actually was him.

Other Players React

Ian Poulter has expressed empathy towards Clark and revealed that he was in this same place mentally and expressed it in much the same way.

“I have inflicted severe Locker destruction through the years at US Opens and paid my fines,” Poulter said in a tweet.  “Generally, they have been our temporary build lockers. Not members’ lockers. Not that that’s an excuse. Generally, it’s been when I’ve felt the USGA have pushed the limits over the edge.”

Unfortunately, the lockers in question don’t look temporary.  They look like the original lockers that have been in the country club for well over a hundred years.  That particular fact is a sticking point for the fans who saw this.  Given the country club’s historic significance in the sport, it is seen as just plain disrespectful to not only the club but to the sport itself.

Has Clark Responded?

At the time of writing, Clark hasn’t confirmed or denied his involvement in the damage done to the lockers.  Luckily, the damage looks to be limited to the front panels and can be replaced.  If Clark confirms that it was him, he would of course have to pay for the damages.  If it wasn’t him, the damage is coming out of someone’s pocket.
