If you're playing basketball, respecting the referees and the rules of the game are very important. While fans criticize officiating at the highest level, referees form an important part of basketball at all levels. Sometimes, they enforce the rules of the game too harshly, as indicated by a viral clip showing a team losing a high school game after the buzzer due to a technical foul.
The buzzer sounded with a one-point win for the home team, prompting one of the players to celebrate by hanging on the rim. The referees were still on the court and missed a technical foul to the player, as the away team sank the shot and forced OT. They ultimately won the game in OT, according to the post with the clip, which was reshared by Shaquille O'Neal.
According to the National Federation of State High School Associations' rulebook which is followed across sanctioned high school basketball games around the country, the referee was entirely correct in the call that he made.
"Each quarter or extra period ends when the signal illuminates or sounds indicating time has expired, as in rule 1-14. EXCEPTIONS: … 4. If a technical foul occurs after the ball becomes dead to end a quarter or extra period, the next quarter or extra period is started by administering the free throws. If the fourth quarter or extra period ends and the score is tied, the free throws will start the extra period. If the score is not tied, and the results of the free throws would tie or win the game, the free throws are administered as part of the preceding quarter/period.”
Imagining an NBA game ending like this seems far-fetched, but could happen. Stranger things have happened with NBA officiating, which is under fire this season.
The league has two active team protests lodged against them right now. The first came from the Portland Trail Blazers for an ejection on Chauncey Billups and another one came this week with a wrong foul call on Jalen Brunson for a game-winning three that cost the Knicks a win.
The team that lost could raise it up with the regulatory authorities, but it's unlikely they'll find any help given the referees acted according to the rulebook.
