Beloved Coach Tragically Shot Dead In Chicago

Bankston was a celebrated figure in Chicago basketball. He starred as a starting point guard at Simeon High School in the 1980s, helping lead the program to a state title during that era.

He later played college basketball at Bradley University and Loyola University Chicago. After his playing days, he dedicated decades to coaching and mentoring young players.

Bankston served as head coach at Thornton Fractional North High School. He also worked as a special education teacher’s aide. In 2004, he was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Family members shared raw grief after the news. His son Timothy Bankston Jr. told reporters, “My dad is a part of me. I have his name. I can carry his legacy.” 

Bankston also left behind a wife and two daughters.

Community Remembers High School Coach as Mentor

His sister Karolyn Wright called the shooting cowardly. She described him as a beautiful spirit and a great family man who was far more than a coach. Another sister remembered him as a gentle giant.

A great-niece said he was always willing to help kids in need both on and off the court. Former players described him as a true father figure.

One former player, Wayne Montgomery, said Bankston taught him honesty and discipline. He credited the coach with prioritizing academics and life lessons.

“Not a bad bone in his body,” Montgomery said. “He touched so many lives.”

The Thornton Fractional High School District released a statement honoring his impact. Officials said countless alumni credit him as the overriding influence that shaped them into positive community members.

The loss hits hard across the Chicago basketball community. Bankston spent his life developing young athletes and guiding them beyond the game. His influence stretched far past the final buzzer.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the shooting. Friends and family are left mourning a man known for generosity and steady leadership. Tributes continue to arrive as the basketball world processes the sudden death of a respected high school coach.
