Football fans were treated to one of the wildest finishes of the year during a marquee high school game between two Alabama programs, Mountain Brook and Homewood.
Despite entering the game as favorites, the Homewood Patriots (ranked 18th in the state) found themselves in a dogfight against the Mountain Brook Spartans (24th in the state). The two teams were tied at 17 at the end of regulation.
Homewood struck first in overtime with a touchdown to take a 24-17 lead. Mountain Brook answered with a TD of their own. Rather than go for the tie, the Spartans wanted to end things with a two-point conversion.
Disaster struck for Mountain Brook as quarterback Cayden Hofbauer couldn’t haul in a bad snap from the center. Hofbauer had to chase the ball back at the 25 and ended up at the 40 as Homewood defenders swarmed him near midfield. Hofbauer uncorked a Hail Mary throw that somehow landed in his teammate’s hands in the end zone.

A regular loss on its own would have hurt Homewood regardless, given that they came into the contest with a spotless 5-0 record. Losing in that manner must have made it feel a hundred times worse for the Patriots players.
Mountain Brook improved its record to 3-2 with the 25-24 victory.
