One of the defining figures during the Golden era, Bill Grant, has passed away at 80. The Instagram post, dated June 3, 2026, has attracted massive heartfelt tributes from the bodybuilding community.
Arnold Sports and other bodybuilders, like Shawn Ray, have taken to social media, offering their condolences to the Grant family. Yet, even though the ‘Man of Steel’ is no longer with us, his legacy continues to define the sport.
Still renowned as having one of the most aesthetic physiques in the world with unmatched symmetry and fluid lines, Grant began training at just 9 years old. Despite limited resources, he honed his passion wherever he got the opportunity.
His first major career breakthrough came in 1974, when he won the IFBB Mr. World Overall in the Tall class. Since then, he competed in 44+ professional contests, clinching the Mr. America and Mr. World titles.
Even in the Olympia stages, Grant placed 4th at the 1976 Mr. Olympia, 5th in 1977, and 7th in 1978, showcasing his ability to deliver at the highest bodybuilding stages.
His V-taper look, impressive eight-pack abs, and chest and shoulder striations defined Golden era physiques, when fluidity and presentation were just as valued as sheer size.
But his legacy goes even beyond the podiums.
Even when resources and training venues were scarce, Grant only let the adversity fuel his passion further, even working out with truck gears at times. That discipline he built early on stayed with him throughout his career.
For Grant, who still hit the gym 3 to 4 times a week even after retirement, age was merely another digit in his life, just like his jaw-dropping competitive pedigree.
Beyond that, Grant also has the fitness program ‘Fit for Life’, appearances in Pumping Iron and Hustler of Muscle Beach, and decades of experience as a fitness trainer under his belt.
His work also includes community efforts in youth programs, sports legend events, and awareness advocacy for Parkinson’s and spinal cord injury.
Throughout his life and career, Bill Grant has led by setting examples, inspiring younger generations, and defining physical benchmarks. What’s a lesson you take from the late bodybuilding legend’s life?
