2025 Cape Cod League Preview: Bourne Braves
Merrily Cassidy/Cape Cod Times / USA TODAY NETWORK

It’s time for the Cape Cod League. The 2025 season will begin on June 14, and some of the best collegiate performers from 2025 will be in Massachusetts to showcase their skills for future MLB Drafts. So, let’s begin our preview of the 2025 season with the Bourne Braves.

Catchers

I’ll start with Gavin Kelly, who hit well as a freshman for the Mountaineers this year. Kelly batted .299 with two home runs and 10 extra-base hits across 51 games.

Campbell Smithwick, who hit .305 with Chatham last year, is back in the Cape with Bourne.

Barczi is a 2025 MLB Draft-eligible player. He missed time two years ago with mono and didn’t get selected, despite participating in the combine. The 20-year-old was Vandy’s regular catcher in 2025 but does not have a strong record of producing offensively. Barczi is a career .241/.304/.407 hitter.

Infielders

It’s a loaded list of infielders for the Bourne Braves, one that includes several breakout performers from 2025.

One is Wake Forest infielder Kade Lewis, who will get a chance to impress with wood bats after a dominant two-year run in the NCAA. Lewis was a standout performer with Butler in 2024 before moving to Wake Forest, and didn’t miss a beat. The 20-year-old slashed .376/.482/.602 (1.084 OPS) with 11 home runs and 29 extra-base hits.

Then, there’s Tyler Minick, who finished in the top ten in home runs among Division I hitters as a sophomore. Minick has above-average power; I know, I saw him blister a shot straight to center field for one of those home runs at St. John’s this spring. But aside from that, he also showed good discipline and pitch recognition.

Owen Paino, a top freshman in 2025, didn’t get regular playing time at Ole Miss this season but will get a big test this summer.

The lone returner this summer is Cam Kozeal, who will not start the 2025 season with the team as he plays in the College World Series.

Outfielders

Arguably, the biggest name in this section is Caden Sorrell.

Sorrell hit 11 home runs as a freshman and looked primed to be a key contributor for the Aggies for years to come. However, he didn’t play until late March this season thanks to a hamstring injury.

When he returned, Sorrell was excellent, as he hit .337 and blasted 12 home runs, one more than 2024 and in far fewer games.

Sorrell is a power hitter, one with a big swing. And, he’ll be a key name to watch next year.

Aside from Sorrell, his teammate, incoming sophomore Sam Erickson, will be on the team. Erickson didn’t play much this season, as he only had 13 at-bats and notched one hit.

Also, yet, Peyton Bonds is related to “that” Bonds. The nephew of Barry and son of Bobby Bonds II, Peyton hit .300 with five home runs this season for the Scarlet Knights.

Utilitymen

There’s a lot of talent here.

Noah Franco was one of the top freshmen heading into the 2025 season and he did not disappoint.

Franco slashed .313/.396/.548 (.944 OPS) with 11 home runs for the Horned Frogs, playing a key role in TCU’s run back into the tourney.

Braden Holcomb, a sophomore like teammate Colin Barczi, hit nine home runs for the Commodores and will be an important name next season.

Kuhio Aloy teamed with his brother to be a key cog for the Razorbacks this season. However, he won’t start in Massachusetts.

Pitchers

Bourne’s pitching staff looks like a typical Cape Cod League one. Numerous juniors on the team who don’t have plus stuff — Evan Chaffee & Louis Marinaro fit that bill — plus some impressive prospects who could become first or second-round picks in a year or two.

Wake Forest starter Chris Levonas was a second-round pick last July by the Brewers. However, he opted not to sign. He didn’t see game action until March and didn’t pitch into the fourth inning until later that month. However, he did impress despite the 5.91 ERA, as Levonas — who can sit in the mid-90s with his fastball and show off a sharp mid-80s slider — struck out 44 over 35 frames.

The other big-name freshman from 2025 is Mason Brassfield, a fastball/slider arm who pumped it up to the low-to-mid-90s as a freshman. Brassfield struck out 68 over 61 frames this season with the Horned Frogs.

Aside from Brassfield & Levonas, there are other interesting names. Left-hander Folger Boaz doesn’t throw hard but has been an important reliever for UNC. Zack Konstantinovsky was a good strikeout pitcher in 2024 as a freshman but missed all of 2025. Louisville lefty Colton Hartman, a big-name high schooler two years ago, worked mainly as a reliever for the Cardinals.

The big name among the bunch is Cameron Flukey, the co-ace of Coastal Carolina’s pitching staff. Much like with Kozeal and Aloy, he won’t be available for the beginning of the year.
