Several teams fading out of the playoff race lost notable pitchers to the IL on July 2. The Braves lost Spencer Schwellenbach at a terrible time, as the right-hander is dealing with an elbow injury that’ll keep him for at least two months. Meanwhile, in Minnesota, Bailey Ober was placed on the IL with a hip issue.
The Tigers officially placed outfielder Kerry Carpenter on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain. It’s retroactive to June 30.
Carpenter left Detroit’s game on June 29 after tweaking the hamstring while running the bases during what became a triple.
Additionally, the Tigers placed pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Long on the IL with neck tightness.
Minnesota lost another starter this week, as Bailey Ober went on the 15-day IL with a left hip impingement. The move is retroactive to June 29.
The move gives Ober a reset after what was a rough June. Ober conceded 14 home runs in June, easily the most in MLB that month. Zac Gallen and Jake Irvin finished with the second-most home runs allowed, at nine.
However, it does mean the Twins lost another notable starter. Pablo Lopez is out until at least August.
The Twins aren’t the only team down multiple starters. Spencer Schwellenbach joined Reynaldo Lopez and Chris Sale on the IL, as the second-year righty went down with a small fracture in his right elbow.
Schwellenbach won’t throw for at least four weeks and the Braves hope he can return in September.
Mets pitcher Sean Manaea gave up six hits and one walk over three innings with Binghamton (AA). Manaea struck out three batters.
Paul Sewald threw a scoreless inning for Columbus (AA) on July 2. Sewald topped out at 92 MPH with his four-seamer.
The Astros placed infielder Luis Guillorme on the 10-day IL with a right hamstring strain.
Baltimore placed reliever Keegan Akin on the injured list with left shoulder inflammation.
Jake Burger (Rangers), Yimi Garcia (Blue Jays), and Daysbel Hernandez (Braves) were activated off the injured list.
