It’s been a difficult week for the Yankees, who lost their sixth consecutive game on July 5 after yet another tough game in Queens. However, arguably the most notable news for the Yankees came before the game, as Clarke Schmidt’s 2025 season concluded thanks to pending elbow surgery.
The Yankees’ pitching depth became thinner on July 5.
Two days after Clarke Schmidt left his start with the ominous description of forearm tightness, manager Aaron Boone stated Schmidt will likely need Tommy John surgery. It would be the second time Schmidt would need to undergo the procedure, as his first came as a college pitcher with the University of South Carolina.
Given that it’s July, Schmidt may very well be out for most, if not, all of the 2026 campaign, as well.
Blue Jays reliever Yimi Garcia is on the IL yet again.
For the second time in 2025, Garcia landed on the injured list on July 5. However, this time it’s for a left ankle sprain. The Blue Jays right-hander made just one appearance since coming back from the IL on July 2.
Mets pitcher Kodai Senga went 3.2 innings pitched (68 pitches) on July 5 with Binghamton (AA). Senga struck out four but gave up six hits and two walks.
Hunter Dobbins struck out eight over five innings for Portland (AA).
Tigers infielder Gleyber Torres exited the team’s contest on July 5 after taking an elbow to the head from infielder Brayan Rocchio, while he was going for second base on a ground ball.
Max Scherzer, meanwhile, dealt with right thumb inflammation during his start against the Angels.
The Giants placed reliever Erik Miller on the 15-day IL with a left elbow sprain.
Corbin Carroll (Diamondbacks), Matt Chapman (Giants), Wyatt Langford (Diamondbacks), Paul Sewald (Guardians), and Mason Thompson (Nationals) were activated off the injured list.
