On a lighter day across Major League Baseball, there was still plenty of injury-related news. A 2025 All-Star reliever will likely be done through the end of 2026, while the Braves will be without Sean Murphy until next year. Additionally, the Phillies deal with more injuries as the reigning NL East champions look for another division title.
Sean Murphy‘s 2025 season is officially over. The Braves announced that Murphy will need season-ending surgery on his hip to fix a labral tear.
General manager Alex Anthopolous stated that Murphy’s hip has been bothering him for roughly three years. The surgery comes with a four-month recovery window, leaving him time to be ready for 2026 Spring Training.
The Mets placed catcher Luis Torrens on the 10-day IL with a right forearm contusion. It’s retroactive to September 7.
Additionally, the Mets provided an update on pitcher Tylor Megill. Megill labored through two innings with Syracuse (AAA) on September 7, and the team stated that he returned to New York for an MRI.
Megill experienced elbow soreness during the outing.
Trea Turner landed on the injured list on September 8, one day after hurting his hamstring running out a ground ball in Miami.
The Turner loss is a fairly significant one. However, the good news is that Turner suffered a Grade 1 hamstring strain, and not a Grade 2 one like the one he suffered last season that kept him out for over a month.
Rob Thomson stated that Turner is expected back come the postseason.
Additionally, Alec Bohm was placed on the 10-day IL officially with left shoulder inflammation.
The Cubs placed closer Daniel Palencia on the 15-day IL with a shoulder strain.
Palencia suffered the injury on September 7. Craig Counsell outlined that the plan is for him to get treatment this week and then be re-evaluated. However, it’s unknown whether Palencia will return before the end of the regular season.
As for their outfielders, Pete Crow-Armstrong returned after missing one day thanks to a stinger from a foul ball. Kyle Tucker remained out of the lineup on September 8. But, Tucker is expected back very soon.
Giants reliever Randy Rodriguez will undergo Tommy John surgery in late September.
The Diamondbacks placed Tyler Locklear on the 10-day IL with left elbow inflammation.
Grant Anderson (Brewers), Alec Burleson (Cardinals), Janson Junk (Marlins), and Max Muncy (Dodgers) were activated off the injured list.
