The Dodgers may be getting reinforcements soon. Rookie Roki Sasaki is nearing a rehab assignment, and he could return within the next month. Meanwhile, in Northern California, the Athletics lost starter Luis Severino to an oblique injury.
The big injury news of the day came in non-MLB action. Yankees legend and Baseball Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera tore his Achilles tendon playing in the team’s Old-Timers’ Day on August 9. It came as Rivera was playing the outfield during the event.
As for the current big-leaguers, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts stated that Roki Sasaki will start for Oklahoma City (AAA) on August 14, which would start his rehab clock. The goal, per Roberts, is for him to throw three innings.
Once Sasaki reaches five innings/75 pitches, the plan is for him to come back to Major League action. That could come in either late August or early September.
The Dodgers’ rookie has been on the IL since the spring with a shoulder impingement.
Athletics pitcher Luis Severino was placed on the 15-day IL on August 9, retroactive to August 6. It’s for a left oblique strain.
Per manager Mark Kotsay, Severino has been pitching through an oblique injury for some time. Kotsay stated he managed it well but suffered from discomfort this week. An MRI revealed the injury.
The team is hopeful that Severino can pitch again this season.
Royals infielder/outfielder Michael Massey went 1-4 with a run scored for Omaha (AAA) on August 9.
Blue Jays infielder Andres Gimenez went 4-5 with two runs scored for Buffalo (AAA). Gimenez played the entire game at second base.
Cardinals infielder Brendan Donovan did not play on August 9 due to reported groin tightness.
Padres pitcher Michael King was activated off the injured list.
