2025 Transactions: Guardians Recall Halpin, Orioles Claim Hamel

With one week left in the 2025 MLB season, there are still moves being made. The Guardians, in the midst of a now-10-game win streak, promoted Petey Halpin to their Major League roster on September 20. Additionally, the Orioles picked up ex-Mets prospect Dom Hamel.

Halpin promoted to Guardians

After Guardians outfielder Nolan Jones went on the IL, Cleveland promoted Petey Halpin to their MLB roster. Halpin went 1-3 in his Major League debut.

Halpin was a third-round pick out of San Mateo, California, five years ago in the shortened 2020 MLB Draft. Cleveland placed him on the 40-man roster after the 2024 campaign.

The 23-year-old outfielder didn’t put up gaudy numbers down in Triple-A. He did hit 14 home runs and 48 extra-base hits across 126 games, and walked 51 times over 553 PA (9.2 BB%). He will expand the zone regularly, as he swung at outside pitches 32.7% of the time with Columbus (AAA).

Halpin played all three outfield positions in the Minors, with most of his time being spent in center field. The 23-year-old did very well at throwing out runners, as he picked up 19 assists between left and center. Fifteen of those came in center.

Hamel claimed by O’s

Baltimore claimed former top Mets prospect Dom Hamel on September 20, two days after the Mets DFA’d the 26-year-old.

Hamel was a third-round pick back in the 2021 MLB Draft and quickly rose in prominence. The right-hander struck out 145 batters across 119 combined innings between High-A and Low-A in 2022.

He pitched well in 2023 with Double-A but struggled with the long ball with Syracuse (AAA). Hamel conceded 35 home runs between 2024 and 2025 (192.1 IP), and the Mets ultimately moved him from the rotation to the bullpen this season.

Hamel doesn’t throw hard. He averaged 92 MPH in his first (and only, to date) Major League appearance. However, he did get swings-and-misses down in the Minors. His slider netted a Whiff% of 40.6% this season with Syracuse.

Other moves

Cubs pitcher Porter Hodge was demoted to Triple-A Iowa.

The Mets selected Richard Lovelady‘s contract, and designated Wander Suero for assignment.

Brewers reliever Joel Payamps was DFA’d by the team.
