2026 Injury Report: Updates on Betts, Rooker, Smith

Much of the injury news from July 1 came out of Sacramento. Mookie Betts sat, Will Smith isn’t close to a return, and Brent Rooker’s 2026 season has come to an early close. Plus, Trent Grisham began a rehab assignment in Double-A.

Betts scratched, Smith out through break

The Dodgers scratched Mookie Betts from the team’s original lineup on July 1. That was due to right wrist soreness. Betts, as of July 1, is currently on a seven-game hitting streak.

There was also an update on Will Smith, on the injured list with a neck injury. Per manager Dave Roberts, Smith will likely be out through the All-Star break.

Smith has not played in a game since June 5.

Rooker done for 2026

Athletics DH Brent Rooker‘s 2026 season is officially over.

Rooker will have season-ending knee surgery to address a cartilage issue within his left knee. The outfielder/designated hitter has been out since early June after he suffered a bone bruise.

IL moves

One day after he was pulled from the Rangers’ game on June 30, Corey Seager was placed on the 10-day IL with low back inflammation.

Giants third baseman Matt Chapman was placed on the 10-day IL with an abdominal strain.

Red Sox pitcher Connelly Early was placed on the 15-day IL with left elbow inflammation.

Tigers reliever Will Vest was placed on the IL with right posterior elbow inflammation, retroactive to June 28.

Kris Bubic (Royals), who has been rehabbing in the Minors from an elbow injury, was transferred to the 60-day IL. Additionally, Kansas City placed Connor Seabold on the 15-day IL with a right lat strain.

Rehab assignments

Astros infielder Braden Shewmake went 0-3 with two walks and a strikeout for Triple-A Sugar Land.

Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham went 1-3 with a walk for Double-A Somerset.

Brewers pitcher Carlos Rodriguez went 1.1 IP for the team’s ACL affiliate. Rodriguez struck out, allowed two hits and one walk, and conceded three earned runs.

Other notes

Byron Buxton (hip), Brandon Nimmo (shoulder), and Willy Adames (back) were held out on the 1st of July.
