2026 Injury Report: Updates on Schwellenbach, Santander, Waldrep

These past two years have not been exactly what the Blue Jays have wanted from Anthony Santander. But it is possible that Santander, on the IL, could come back in September. The Braves, meanwhile, know that Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep won’t be back.

Two Braves pitchers done for year

Both Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep have thrown their last pitches of 2026.

The Braves plan to have Schwellenbach undergo season-ending surgery to repair a fractured right elbow. It’s been an injury that’s kept the right-hander off the mound and on the IL for all of 2026. In fact, it was an injury that kept him out for a healthy chunk of 2025, as well.

As for Waldrep, he will undergo UCL reconstruction surgery, meaning he likely won’t be back until 2028.

Updates on Santander

Blue Jays OF/DH Anthony Santander has been working on both sides of the plate, continuing to progress in his rehab from a shoulder injury, per manager John Schneider.

The hope, per Schneider, is to have Santander play at some point over the final month.

IL moves

The Reds placed third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes on the 10-day IL with a left groin strain, retroactive to August 27.

Cardinals infielder Blaze Jordan was placed on the 10-day IL with a left ankle sprain.

The Mets transferred Jorge Polanco, who is done for the year, to the 60-day IL.

Rehab assignments

Mets infielder Mark Vientos, playing third base, went 0-for-2 with a strikeout and a walk for Triple-A Syracuse.

Blue Jays pitcher Jameson Taillon went 3.1 IP (48 pitches) for Triple-A Buffalo, allowing three hits and two walks.

Dodgers catcher Will Smith went 0-for-3 with a strikeout.

Other notes

Max Fried is scheduled to come off the IL and pitch in the second game of the Yankees’ doubleheader on the 29th.

Twins general manager Jeremy Zoll indicated that Byron Buxton, dealing with a hip injury, may need offseason surgery.
