Guardians pitcher Parker Messick came so close to Major League Baseball’s first no-hitter since 2024. Still, he pitched very well for a Guardians team that picked up yet another win on April 16. And another young pitcher, Chase Dollander, also excelled on the day.
Parker Messick came just three outs shy of a no-hitter in what was, arguably, his best start as a Major Leaguer.
The Guardians left-hander struck out nine over eight plus innings before his no-hitter was ended by Leody Taveras. Messick (29% Whiff%) gave up two earned runs, although neither scored while he was on the mound. Cade Smith allowed both of the runners he was responsible for to score.
George Valera, Steven Kwan, and Jose Ramirez all had two hits on the day. Ramirez hit a two-run home run off Shane Baz in the first inning.
Yet again, Chase Dollander thrived in a bulk relief role.
The Rockies pitcher struck out nine over 5.1 IP and earned his second win of the season. Dollander (35.9% Whiff%) came in after Juan Mejia opened the game and only allowed one hit and two walks against the Astros.
Colorado put up enough runs to earn a 3-2 victory. Hunter Goodman hit his fifth home run of the year off Ryan Weiss.
Thanks to a James Wood single in the 10th inning, the Nationals were able to secure an 8-7 victory over the Pirates.
Foster Griffin, yet again, pitched well. Griffin’s 31.8% Whiff% was one of the best on the day, one that saw him strike out seven over 5.1 IP. His lone mistake on the day was a three-run shot surrendered to Marcell Ozuna. That, by the way, was Ozuna’s first home run with the Pirates.
As for the Pirates, Jake Mangum had three hits for the Bucs. Nick Gonzales, Oneil Cruz, Brandon Lowe, and Konnor Griffin all had two hits. Braxton Ashcraft (32.7% Whiff%), meanwhile, continued his strong start with seven strikeouts over 5.2 IP.
The Angels were able to successfully piece together a bullpen game against the Yankees, as Los Angeles won 11-4.
New York’s offense was able to do damage, as Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Ben Rice all hit home runs. However, the Angels were able to walk seven times and picked up nine hits in the victory.
Mike Trout went yard again, his fifth of the series. Jo Adell and Oswald Peraza also hit home runs.
