2026 Transactions: Giants Select Lonsway, Cubs DFA Milner

Just before September 1, several notable relievers are set to become available, including Caleb Ferguson and Hoby Milner. And speaking of relievers, Seth Lonsway is now a Major Leaguer.

Giants promote reliever

The Giants selected pitcher Seth Lonsway from the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats.

Lonsway was a big arm from college who went undrafted in the abbreviated 2020 MLB Draft, returned to Ohio State, and was ultimately picked in the sixth round in 2021 by San Francisco.

Now 27 years of age, Lonsway put up big strikeout numbers early but has been bitten badly by walks. Lonsway, a heavy groundball pitcher, allowed 50 walks over 75 innings across two levels this season.

DFA’s

The Cubs designated reliever Hoby Milner for assignment. Milner, signed by the club in the offseason, was down in Triple-A on rehab for a month before the move. The veteran left-hander was on the IL thanks to an appendectomy.

Cardinals reliever Caleb Ferguson was designated for assignment. Ferguson, acquired at the deadline from the Reds, allowed a run in four of his final five outings with St. Louis.

Yankees pitcher Justin Topa was designated for assignment after Game 1 of the club’s doubleheader against the Red Sox on August 29.

Additionally, the Angels designated Shaun Anderson for assignment.

Recalls & options

Brycen Mautz (Cardinals), Wikelman Gonzalez (Marlins), Raymond Burgos (Red Sox), Matt Wilkinson (Giants), Mitch Bratt (D-backs), and Brendan Beck (Yankees) were recalled.

Spencer Bivens (Giants), Wyatt Olds (Red Sox), Patrick Montverde (Marlins), Eric Wagaman (Mets), and Kohl Drake (D-backs) were optioned to the Minors.

Other notes

Former Mariners outfielder Jarred Kelenic signed a Minor League deal with the Yankees. Kelenic was assigned to Triple-A.

The Diamondbacks selected reliever Derek Law from Triple-A Reno.
