While the Chicago Cubs made the postseason for a second-straight season, they were promptly swept in the Wild Card Series. The franchise has clear areas to improve on their roster.
Most notable is their pitching staff. Chicago’s starting pitchers finished the 2026 campaign ranked 26th in ERA (4.27). The Cubs’ offense was able to carry them into the dance. But more consistent arms will be necessary to find sustained success.
There will be plenty of potent names available in free agency. Superstar Tarik Skubal is sure to get the bag while Michael King will cash in amongst others. The Cubs seem likely to be involved in those discussions.
But now, Chicago’s pitching need has become even more dire. Two of their own have now entered the free agency pool.
Both Clay Holmes and Matthew Boyd have declined their player options, becoming free agents, via Jesse Rogers of ESPN. They join Shota Imanaga and Kevin Gausman as Cubs pitchers no longer with the franchise.
“Cubs off season will be busy on the mound,” Rogers wrote. “Clay Holmes and Matthew Boyd are turning down their player options to become free agents. Shota Imanaga, Kevin Gausman and David Peterson are FA’s as well. Have to rebuild the staff. Guess is 1-2 of above could return.”
Boyd had been with the team for two seasons, being named an All-Star in 2025. Over 53 games, the left-hander held a 3.50 ERA and a 250/81 K/BB ratio. Holmes came to the Cubs at the deadline. In his nine starts, the righty put up a 4.25 ERA and a 33/24 K/BB ratio.
With so many innings hitting free agency, it wouldn’t be a shock to see the Cubs reunite with at least one of the four aforementioned pitchers. Chicago wants real change and to go big game hunting. But they need to fill out the rotation as well.
How the Cubs decide to operate will be telling of their intentions. But at least for now, Chicago’s plans won’t include Boyd or Holmes.
