The Boston Red Sox released right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler on Friday in order to make room on the active roster for prospect Payton Tolle.
Buehler, 30, was signed to a one-year contract worth $21.05M this offseason. Boston was gambling that the two-time All-Star would bounce back with a change of scenery, especially after he pitched well in the playoffs last season for the Dodgers.
Unfortunately the move did not pay off for the Red Sox, as Buehler pitched to a 7-7 record with a 5.40 ERA and just a 16.5% strikeout rate compared to an ugly 10.8% walk rate.
Additionally, Buehler's once electric fastball averaged just 94 miles per hour, down 2-3 ticks from his Dodger days.

Buehler has yet to regain his form after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2022, but his pedigree as a top prospect and pair of All-Star performances will almost certainly lead to someone taking a chance on him to close out the regular season.
Here are three teams that could give Buehler a look down the stretch:
Detroit Tigers
Detroit has long been a top destination for pitchers hoping to rebuild value, with star pitching coach Chris Fetter helping to turn things around for guys like Jack Flaherty, Michael Lorenzen, and most recently Chris Paddack and Charlie Morton.
Detroit's rotation is set right now, but with injuries piling up and the Tigers fancying themselves World Series contenders, adding an arm like Buehler makes perfect sense. He can operate in long relief while the Tigers coaching staff works on fixing the issues that have plagued him the past few years, and if he unlocks anything he can be a part of the team's playoff roster where he brings a wealth of postseason experience - something lacking on Detroit's current roster.
Houston Astros
Houston lost a pair of starters to Tommy John surgery this summer in Hayden Wesneski and Ronel Blanco, and a veteran with playoff experience like Buehler could be the depth option this team needs to win the AL West and make another deep run in the playoffs.
Los Angeles Dodgers
Buehler's longtime home could be the most obvious spot for the 30-year-old. Buehler left LA with the Dodgers having a full rotation in place, but now with Roki Sasaki, Tony Gonsolin, River Ryan, and Gavin Stone all on the injured list there is room for Buehler to return home and snag a spot in the rotation or even in the bullpen.
