The Braves have quite the offseason ahead of them. Armed with some cash to spend, Alex Anthopoulos should be among the most active general managers, as he aims to patch up a plethora of holes up and down the roster.
In all facets, the Braves need more pitching. They could at use at least one frontline starter and multiple relievers. Another outfielder/DH also makes some sense, and both middle infield positions could be addressed.
Over at The Athletic, Jim Bowden released his list of the top 25 free agents for the upcoming offseason, many of which would fill Atlanta’s needs.
Valdez is as consistent as they come, a lot like Max Fried in that respect. He’s well on his way to his fourth straight top ten finish in the AL Cy Young race and has a ton of experience pitching in the postseason. The price tag won’t be cheap, but adding him alongside Chris Sale and Spencer Schwellenbach at the top of the rotation is very enticing.
It’s difficult to imagine a world where the Braves outbid the Phillies for Schwarber’s services, who is squarely in the middle of the NL MVP race as he attempts to mash 50 home runs. But there’s no question he fills a pretty considerable need in Atlanta with Marcell Ozuna set to test free agency. Adding Schwarber to the middle of the lineup would instantly ease any concerns about the Braves offense.
After a dismal 2024 campaign, Bichette has done a fantastic job rebuilding his value, hitting .297 with an .803 OPS. There are questions about his future at shortstop. He’s already below average defensively at the position, and that’s not likely going to improve with age. But in the Braves’ case, they need a shortstop and a second baseman, making Bichette a very attractive free agent if the price is right.
An often overlooked member of the incredible Phillies rotation, Suarez is putting together a career year, and he’s one of the most dominant postseason pitchers of this generation. In 37.2 playoff innings, he owns a 1.43 ERA. Suarez is exactly the type of pitcher the Braves should looking for this winter.
Cease’s stuff suggests he should be competing for the Cy Young award every single season, but he’s been rather inconsistent throughout his career, and that’s continued this season. Somebody is going to bet on his ceiling this offseason, and it could make or break their franchise.
Probably the better of the two Padres starting pitchers set to test free agency, Michael King has seamlessly transitioned to the rotation with San Diego, boasting a 2.92 ERA over the last two seasons. He has dealt with some injuries this year, but he’ll have a very healthy market once he opts out of his mutual option.
Chapman has been one of the game’s best relievers for a long time, and he’s having his best season at 37-years-old with the Boston Red Sox, recording a 1.15 ERA over 52 appearances.
Diaz has had some bumps in the road over the course of his time with the Mets, but when he’s right, there might not be a better closer in baseball. In 2025, he’s striking out over 13 batters per nine innings to go along with a 1.69 ERA.
The Braves love a good reclamation project, and Zac Gallen could be the perfect target for that this offseason. After three incredible years for the Diamondbacks, he owns a 5.28 ERA this season, which could mean he might be in the market for a short term contract to rebuild his value.
Weaver has put together back-to-back really good seasons out of the Yankees bullpen, pitching to the tune of a 2.75 ERA over 109 appearances.
Another starting arm that should be on the Braves’ radar, Merrill Kelly would fit very nicely behind Chris Sale and Spencer Schwellenbach. Over the last four seasons, he’s made 101 starts (and counting) and posted a 3.43 ERA. He was also fantastic during the Diamondbacks World Series run in 2023, recording a 2.25 ERA in four starts.
