It was not long ago that Anthony Volpe's future with the New York Yankees was in real doubt following a disappointing 2025 season, which was followed by offseason shoulder surgery.
In 153 games last season, Volpe slashed .212/.272/.391 with 19 home runs, 72 RBI and 18 stolen bases. While Volpe's 19 long balls were certainly impressive after he slugged just 12 the year prior, the 25-year-old's season was overshadowed by continued inconsistency at the plate and a rough season with the glove.
Volpe committed 19 errors last season, which was in sharp contrast to his previous two seasons when he excelled in the field. He admitted after the Yankees' season ended in the ALDS against the Toronto Blue Jays that he played with a partially torn left labrum for part of the year, leading to the aforementioned surgery.
The former top prospect for New York ended up starting this season on the injured list, but was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after his rehab finished due to Jose Caballero's emergence, putting Volpe's future with the Yankees in serious doubt.
But when Caballero landed on the injured list with a finger injury, which he suffered while on the bases last week, the Bronx Bombers turned to their former starting shortstop and he hasn't looked back.
Since returning to the major leagues, Volpe is batting .294 with three runs scored, two stolen bases, and an OPS of .912 in just six games. He has also looked great with the glove at shortstop, which was certainly a welcoming sign after struggling so mightily last season.
Volpe's strong performance since returning has led manager Aaron Boone to praise the shortstop as the aforementioned Caballero nears his return.
"I think he's looked outstanding. Forget about results or hitting for average - the quality of at-bat has been really good every day. Swing decisions. The baserunning's been excellent. He's played really well," Boone said prior to New York's game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

While Caballero has rightfully played his way as the starting shortstop for the Yankees, it would almost seem a little foolish if the team opts to send Volpe back to Triple-A when Caballero returns.

But the good news is the Yankees have some options when he returns. New York could send infielder Max Schuemann down to the minor leagues, who is not an everyday player. They could also choose to either slide Volpe or Caballero to third base in favor of Ryan McMahon, who has not had a good season thus far.
With Volpe showing over these last six games that he belongs in the big leagues and with Boone's high praise of him, he may be sticking around in the Bronx for the long haul.
The Yankees continue their series with the Blue Jays tonight with Volpe in the lineup, batting eighth.
