On Wednesday, former New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs star Anthony Rizzo announced his retirement from MLB after 14 seasons. Following this announcement, Yankees skipper Aaron Boone sent him a heartfelt message.

The first baseman joined the MLB in 2011 through the San Diego Padres. He was selected in the 2007 draft by the Boston Red Sox but was traded to the Padres in 2010. After hitting just .141 with 46 strikeouts in 128 at-bats, he was traded away to the Cubs in 2012.

It was at the Cubs where Rizzo made a huge name for himself. He would spend 9 years with the Chicago-based side and was part of multiple playoff runs with the team.

One of his finest memories in a Cubs uniform was undoubtedly the final out of Game 7 of the 2016 World Series. Rizzo was on the 1st base and cleanly collected the ball to secure the final out against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field to end a 108-year World Series drought.

After 9 successful years with the Cubs, Rizzo would join the Yankees on a trade in July 2021 and don the pinstripes. His 3-year stint in the Bronx ended with an American League pennant title last season.

In the offseason, the AL side would decline the club option on him, which made him a free agent. After failing to find a new team, the 36-year-old decided to hang up his boots.

In his long career, Rizzo was named an All-Star 3 times. He would also win the Gold Glove for the first base position 4 times (including a Platinum Glove in 2016). Moreover, Rizzo is one of the 162 MLB players to hit more than 300 home runs in their career. His 300th home run came in April last year in a 15-5 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

The American international finished his MLB career with 303 home runs and 961 RBIs. In 6,288 total at-bats, Rizzo had a slashline of .261/.361/.467.

Before the game against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday, Yankees manager Aaron Boone was asked about his reaction to this. The 52-year-old called him a “ great” player and spoke on his impact in the Yankees clubhouse.

Obviously, a great career. All-Stars, Gold Gloves, Silver Slugger, world champion, a key figure for us here these last few years. He’s a great player and [had] a great career that he should be very proud of. It was great having him here for a few years and the impact he had on a lot of our guys.

Rizzo did have some health problems during his tenure with the Yankees. In his final year, he managed to take part in just 92 games. He batted with a .228 average and had just 8 home runs and 35 RBIs in the regular season.

Anthony Rizzo to become the club ambassador of the Chicago Cubs following retirement

Anthony Rizzo will retire as a Chicago Cubs star this coming Saturday. He will, however, remain with the team and work as a club ambassador.

In a statement released, executive chairman Tom Ricketts expressed that the team was excited to have him represent the club going forward as the ambassador.

Anthony Rizzo was the face of one of the most successful eras in Chicago Cubs history and we are so excited he will be a part of our organization for many years to come. His play on the field spoke for itself and was recognized with multiple All-Star appearances, Gold Glove Awards, the Roberto Clemente Award and, ultimately, being a team leader on the 2016 World Series championship team.
