Alex Anthopoulos comments on the future of Braves manager Brian Snitker

Whether it’s warranted or not, much of Braves Country is hoping the tenure of Brian Snitker will end in a few weeks. The club has not won a playoff series in four years and will miss the postseason for the first time in eight seasons.

However, it’s highly unlikely the Braves fire Brian Snitker. He’s been to the playoffs in each of the last seven seasons, won six division titles and a World Series. That’s a helluva resumé, one that should buy him some good grace if he wants to continue managing in Atlanta. The real question is, after 50 years in the organization, does he want to hang it up?

The expectation is that he will at season’s end, according to a report from earlier in the season.

“Former Marlins manager Skip Schumaker and bench coach Walt Weiss are expected to be strong candidates to replace Brian Snitker as Atlanta’s manager when he retires after the season,” Bob Nightengale wrote in July.

To this point, nothing has been announced formally, with Alex Anthopoulos saying on Monday that the Braves have not begun making plans in the event that Brian Snitker does decide to retire.

With the way things have been trending, it’s fair to say the Braves clubhouse could potentially benefit from a new voice. Atlanta has gone from the cream of the crop in the National League to a cellar dweller in a two-year span. It feels like this is a scenario where both sides could mutually part ways, but the situation would get a lot more interesting if Snitker insisted on managing another season.

That said, retirement does feel like the most likely conclusion at this point, which will make this winter even more intriguing. The Braves have a lot of holes on the roster that need addressing, but the first order of business could be hiring a new manager.
