When Alex Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million deal with the Boston Red Sox during the offseason, it sparked the inevitable departure of franchise cornerstone Rafael Devers. While the fallout of the Devers deal will be felt for the next decade, Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, publicly opened the door for an extension with the team. Although non-committal to a numerical value or timetable, Boras made it clear that his client is willing to discuss lengthening his stay in Boston.
Bregman, who has been sidelined with a lingering quad injury since late May, talked to the media on Monday amid his recovery. While the former All-Star revealed he could possibly return before the All-Star break, he also addressed Boras’ statement regarding a contract extension.
“We’re on the same page, Scott and I. Obviously, open to listening to whatever the team has to say,” Bregman said.”
When asked if signing an extension is something he would classify as a priority, Bregman steered the conversation to his recovery and eventual return to the lineup.
“Honestly, I am focused on getting back on the field and trying to help this team win baseball games. Getting back as soon as possible. As healthy as possible. Making a push to get into this [playoff] race and get into the postseason,” said Bregman via Rob Bradford of WEEI. “When I signed here in the first place, I believed this team is a team that can play playoff baseball. And I still believe that. I’m focused on getting back, contributing to helping this team do that.”

Although Boston has yet to approach Bregman about an extension, the prospects of securing the former World Series to another multi-year deal is enticing. For a front office desperate to win back the goodwill of their fans, Bregman’s extension could the first step into that process.
Before suffering a quad injury, Bregman was slashing .299/.385/.553 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs. Despite missing the last month, he still ranks top five on the team in doubles, home runs, and batting average.
