While the Los Angeles Dodgers are seemingly focused on addressing their bullpen at the trade deadline, there have been reports of having interest in acquiring an outfielder as well.

That’s presumably tied to Michael Conforto’s inconsistencies this season, but it’s also indicative of the Dodgers’ overall struggles on the position player side. The bulk of Dodgers injuries have impacted the pitching staff, but as of late Max Muncy and Enrique Hernández have been out.

Meanwhile, Hyeseong Kim is playing through a left shoulder issue that has seemingly affected his swing.

According to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, the Dodgers are calling up top infield prospect Alex Freeland from Triple-A Oklahoma City:

The Los Angeles Dodgers are set to call up infielder Alex Freeland, a league source told The Athletic, shoring up their position player group and bringing the club’s most promising middle infield prospect to the majors.

Freeland is batting .253/.377/.421 with 26 doubles, 12 home runs and 71 RBI over 94 games with the Comets so far this year. Freeland finished the 2024 season at the Triple-A level as well, which came after starting with High-A Great Lakes and earning a promotion to Double-A.

Freeland joining the Dodgers for his MLB debut comes amid indications the front office was intent on keeping him and Dalton Rushing at the trade deadline.

How Alex Freeland can help Dodgers

Freeland has primarily played shortstop throughout his Minor League career but has expanded to making semi-regular starts at third base this season. He also is capable of playing second base.

Freeland presumably will play second base and third base with the Dodgers. Starting at second would move Tommy Edman to center field and also allow Andy Pages to slide over to left field.

Muncy is expected to return next week from a bone bruise in his left knee, but Freeland likely will help fill in at third base for the time being. The Dodgers currently have one open spot on their 40-man roster.
