All-Star Infielder Gleyber Torres Leaves Yankees For AL Playoff Team

The New York Yankees won't have Gleyber Torres on their roster for the 2025 MLB season. Moments ago, it was revealed that he's signing with a team in the AL Central.

According to reports, the Detroit Tigers have agreed to a deal with Torres. The terms of his contract are unknown at this time. It's not surprising that he's leaving the Yankees though. Many fans expected that to be the case once the World Series wrapped up. While the two-time All-Star is a respectable hitter, his fielding leaves a lot to be desired.

When Yankees general manager Brian Cashman was asked about Torres at last month's GM Meetings, he sounded like an executive who wasn't very interested in retaining the 28-year-old's services.

"I'm not gonna dissect what he's good at and not as good at," Cashman said. "Obviously he'll have a lot of conversations with a lot of teams that have a need in that area and that might include us, who knows. But appreciate his efforts while he was here."

Torres finished the 2024 season with a .257 batting average, 15 homers and 63 RBI. The Tigers would welcome that production in their everyday lineup.

Even before Torres left the Yankees, the front office in the Bronx was looking at ways to upgrade its infield. So far, they've signed Paul Goldschmidt. Perhaps they'll make another move in the coming weeks.

"We're just obviously gonna make the best decisions we can from what's available from within or outside," Cashman said in November. "We can import a third baseman and move Jazz over. ... We can run into some trade opportunities or free agents. Just not too sure what we're gonna do just yet."

The Yankees have been linked to longtime Houston Astros star Alex Bregman, but that would be an expensive acquisition for the reigning AL champions.
