The Los Angeles Angels placed catcher Logan O’Hoppe on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a left wrist fracture, a significant blow to a team that has leaned on him more than almost any other player this season.
O'Hoppe exited Saturday's 12-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals after taking a foul ball off the bat of catcher Carter Jensen directly on his exposed left wrist during the seventh inning. He immediately shot up, tucking his catching hand toward his body in pain. After checking with the Angels trainers, he stayed in the game to finish off the seventh inning before exiting the game.
#Angels transactions:
— Angels PR (@LAAngelsPR) April 26, 2026
•Recalled RHP José Fermin from Triple-A Salt Lake
•Selected the contracts of LHP Joey Lucchesi (#67) & C Sebastián Rivero (#38)
•Placed C Logan O’Hoppe on 10-day IL (left wrist fracture)
•Designated RHP Shaun Anderson & RHP Jordan Romano for assignment
The initial diagnosis following the game was wrist irritation, leaving some room for optimism before Sunday’s news. What the Angels had hoped would be a minor injury turned out to be a fracture, landing O’Hoppe on the 10-day IL and forcing the Angels to slot backup catcher Travis d’Arnaud behind the plate.
O’Hoppe started in 26 of the Angels' 28 games this season, logging one of the highest workloads among catchers in baseball. So far, the 26-year-old has a .205 batting average with 16 hits in 95 plate appearances.
Now, d’Arnaud will step in for O’Hoppe as the primary option behind the plate. The veteran, a former All-Star and Silver Slugger, brings more than a decade of major league experience to the position. The 37-year-old from Long Beach will have to adjust to the workload as he has only appeared in six games as a catcher for the Halos this season. Sebastian Rivero will back him up after the Angels selected him from Triple-A Salt Lake.
The Angels also recalled right-hander Jose Fermin from Salt Lake and selected the contract of Joey Lucchesi. Lucchesi posted a 3.76 ERA in 38 games with the San Francisco Giants in 2025 and has already appeared three times for the Angels this year, allowing two runs in 2 1/3 innings.
To clear 40-man roster space, Los Angeles designated right-handers Jordan Romano and Shaun Anderson for assignment.
How long O’Hoppe remains out will depend on the severity of the fracture, but wrist injuries for catchers can keep them out for a while, especially when the fracture is in the catching hand. The Angels are at 12-16 and fourth in the AL West, and now having to work with a backup catcher, the team has another obstacle to navigate as they head deeper into the 2026 season.
