The Los Angeles Angels received encouraging news on Nolan Schanuel as the first baseman takes another step toward returning from injury.

The Angels announced Sunday that Schanuel will begin a minor league rehab assignment with the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees. Right-handed pitcher Sam Bachman will also continue his own rehab assignment with Salt Lake.

Schanuel has been sidelined since late August with a right intercostal muscle strain. The 24-year-old had appeared in 107 games before the injury, hitting .276 with a .351 on-base percentage, seven home runs, 22 doubles and 49 RBI.

His absence forced the Angels to make changes around the infield while they waited for him to recover. Now, a productive rehab stint could put Schanuel in position to return to the major league roster before the end of September.

Bachman is also working toward a return after dealing with a shoulder and arm issue. The former first-round pick has made 41 relief appearances this season, posting a 4.14 ERA and 1.34 WHIP over 45.2 innings.

Bachman has struck out 46 batters during that stretch while holding opponents to a .202 batting average. Continuing his rehab assignment in Salt Lake gives him another opportunity to build up before potentially returning to the Angels’ bullpen.

Neither player is being rushed back, with the Angels having little reason to push their young players through the final weeks of a difficult season.

Los Angeles entered Sunday at 56-93 and sits fifth in the American League West. The Angels are preparing to host the Seattle Mariners in their upcoming series at Angel Stadium.

For Schanuel, the focus now shifts to getting through his rehab games without a setback. His bat could give the Angels another important piece to evaluate before the offseason.

Bachman will have the same goal as he continues working his way back to the major league bullpen.
