The New York Yankees have been one of baseball's best teams through the early weeks of the 2026 season. Entering Sunday's series finale at Daikin Park, the Yankees sit at 18-9. They are comfortably atop the AL East and are riding an eight-game winning streak that has announced them as legitimate American League contenders.
The offense has been relentless during this stretch. Aaron Judge has provided the power at the top of the lineup, while Ben Rice and Amed Rosario continue to put up impressive numbers.
The one missing piece since Opening Day has been Anthony Volpe. The 24-year-old shortstop underwent surgery to repair a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder last October. He was placed on the injured list on March 22 and has been working his way back since. The rehab process has been methodical.
Volpe began his assignment with Double-A Somerset on April 14, going 0-for-2 in his first outing against rehabbing Phillies ace Zack Wheeler. He finished the Somerset stint hitting .364 with four hits, two stolen bases and a perfect fielding percentage at shortstop over four games before the Yankees promoted him. His rehab assignment was transferred to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on April 21.
On Sunday, baseball reporter Francys Romero reported that Volpe is expected to play a couple of games with Somerset before rejoining the Yankees between Wednesday, against the Texas Rangers, and Thursday.

Volpe slashed .212/.272/.391 across 153 games with 19 home runs, 72 RBIs and 18 stolen bases, a down year by any standard. He suffered the shoulder injury in May and played through it for the better part of the season, which may have contributed to his dip in production.
Nevertheless, he remains a valuable player on the roster if he can regain the impressive form that won him AL Gold Glove at shortstop as a rookie in 2023. That same year, he became the first Yankee in franchise history to hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in a debut season.
In the meantime, the Yankees will send Luis Gil to the mound Sunday against Spencer Arrighetti and the Houston Astros, with first pitch set for 2:10 p.m. ET. A win on Sunday would make it nine straight for New York and complete a third consecutive series sweep.
