The New York Mets are looking to add more firepower to their roster after a disappointing start to the offseason.
Watching other teams lure Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz away was a big hit for the fans, especially after the team's second-half collapse in 2025.
That’s why the only way to salvage this offseason and save face for GM David Stearns might be to go after the bigger fish in free agency.
According to a report by Mark W. Sanchez of the New York Post, that’s exactly what they did. More importantly, their virtual meeting with Kyle Tucker reportedly went quite well.
“David Stearns and crew met recently over Zoom with baseball’s top free agent, sources confirmed, demonstrating at least a possibility that this winter in Queens can be remembered for additions as much as subtractions,” Sanchez wrote. “A source said the Mets virtual get-together went well.”
Tucker has been the most sought-after free agent in the offseason. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays are also reportedly keeping tabs on the 28-year-old superstar.
While not the power-hitter the Mets had in Alonso, who left Queens after hitting a franchise-record 264 home runs in seven years, Tucker is a much more well-rounded player.
He’s an outstanding defensive player with elite plate discipline, and he’s posted a fWAR of at least 4.2 in each of his past five seasons.
As bad as the offseason might seem for the Mets, they’re not that far behind in terms of contention, and adding a player of Tucker’s caliber might be just what they need to finally get back on track.
