The Arizona Diamondbacks have been struggling this season and they have added to their list of woes as starting pitcher and massive free agent signing Corbin Burnes landed on the Injured List on Tuesday. He left his most recent start in the fifth inning but may have avoided any massive injury. Either way, this is a significant blow to the team so let’s take a closer look at what happened and what this means for the team going forward.
The Arizona Diamondbacks sit in fourth place in the NL West with a 28-31 record and the team officially placed starting pitcher Corbin Burnes on the Injured List with elbow inflammation. This should be seen as a massive victory as during the fifth inning of his recent start against the Washington Nationals, his fastball dropped 2-3 MPH in velocity and you could see Burnes say he suffered an elbow injury. This had baseball fans fearing the worst, but it could appear that this is not going to lead to a season-ending injury for the ace pitcher.
Burnes has gotten off to a strong start to his 2025 season as in 11 starts he is 3-2 with a 2.66 ERA and a 1.166 WHIP with 63 strikeouts in 63.1 innings. He signed a massive six-year, $210 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks this offseason, and is the most expensive deal that the team has ever given out to a player. With Jordan Montgomery already on the Injured List and missing the entire 2025 season with Tommy John surgery, the severity of this injury could be the difference in the D-Backs trading away pitcher Zac Gallen at the 2025 MLB Trade Deadline.
This could be a precursor to a longer injury, but Arizona placed Burnes on the 15-day Injured List and re-called Tommy Henry with the corresponding move. Sports Talk Radio host John Gambadoro is reporting that Burnes will be receiving a second opinion on his right elbow as the initial tests were inconclusive. It will be interesting to see the next time that Burnes is going to be on the mound.
