A’s waste Civale gem in 6-4 loss

The Athletics carried a three-run lead into the seventh inning Thursday night, but one rough frame undid an otherwise sharp start in a 6-4 loss to the Mariners at Hohokam Stadium.

Oakland got six scoreless innings from Aaron Civale, who struck out 11 and allowed only two hits. However, the Mariners broke through as soon as he exited. J.T. Ginn came on in the seventh and Seattle tagged him for six runs in two-thirds of an inning to erase a 3-0 deficit and take control.

Randy Arozarena started the rally with an RBI single. Then Ryan Bliss lined a two-run single to tie it. Cal Raleigh delivered the biggest blow moments later, ripping a three-run double to center that pushed Seattle in front 6-3.

Civale cruises, A’s cash in

Before the seventh-inning collapse, the Athletics were in command.

Nick Kurtz and Shea Langeliers opened the fourth with back-to-back doubles to put Oakland on the board. Brent Rooker followed with an RBI single, and the A’s added a third run later in the inning on a passed ball after Tyler Soderstrom moved to third.

That was all the support Civale needed for most of the night. He pounded the zone, missed bats and kept Seattle quiet. By the time he left, the Mariners had managed just two hits and no runs against him.

Not enough late life

Oakland scratched out one more run in the eighth when Luke Mann doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Carlos Cortes’ groundout. That cut the deficit to 6-4.

The A’s put one more runner aboard in the ninth when Drew Swift singled to open the inning, but Seattle closer Reese Lumpkin closed the door from there.

Oakland finished with six hits. Langeliers doubled and drove in a run, Rooker had an RBI single and Mann added a late double off the bench. Kurtz also doubled and scored.

Bullpen turns the night

The game changed fast once Civale departed.

Ginn took the loss and was charged with all six Seattle runs in the seventh. Brooks Kriske stopped the damage, and Elvis Alvarado and Jack Perkins followed with scoreless work, but the hole was too deep by then.

Seattle finished with 10 hits and went 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Oakland went 2-for-8.
