Fresh off a weekend sweep of the Minnesota Twins, the Houston Astros will be without one of their key starting pitchers to begin a three-game set with the Athletics.
The Astros have scratched right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. from Monday night's start and placed him on the 15-Day injured list with a right foot sprain, per a report from The Athletic's Chandler Rome. The move is retroactive to June 13.

McCullers Jr. made his first start for the Astros last month after a two and a half year layoff following surgery to repair his right hip flexor. Since returning, the 31-year-old has made seven starts, recording a 1-2 record with 4.91 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 29 one-thirds innings.
In his most recent outing, McCullers allowed four runs while striking out six batters in five innings during a 4-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox on June 10. His best start this season came on May 28, when he registered a career-high tying 12 strikeouts in a 5-3 win over the Athletics.
Journeyman Jason Alexander, claimed off waivers last month, has been recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land to replace McCullers on the roster. Originally slated to start Tuesday's game, Ryan Gusto will take the mound Monday night in McCullers absence. The 26-year-old right hander is 4-3 this season, with a 4.56 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 15 games.
McCullers is one of several Astros starters to be placed on the injured list this season.
Hayden Wesneski and Ronel Blanco are both out with season-ending Tommy John surgery, while the team is still awaiting the return of Spencer Arrighetti, who has been out since April after breaking his thumb. Luis Garcia - who also had Tommy John surgery in 2023 - Christian Javier, and J.P. France have also been out the entire season with injuries.
