General manager Dana Brown and his staff entered discussions involving Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal but came up short when the two-time Cy Young Award winner was dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers late Saturday night. Multiple reports indicated the Astros quickly turned their attention elsewhere as the trade deadline approached.

According to reporting by Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Houston would be quite pleased to land Robbie Ray from the San Francisco Giants. The move would represent a practical pivot for a club that has climbed steadily in the standings after a difficult opening stretch of the 2026 season.

“The Houston Astros jumped into the sweepstakes for Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, but realistically, would be quite pleased to acquire Robbie Ray of the San Francisco Giants,” Nightengale wrote.

Ray, the 2021 American League Cy Young winner during his time with the Toronto Blue Jays, has posted solid numbers this year for the Giants. Through 22 starts he is 10-6 with a 3.08 earned-run average, having logged 122⅔ innings with 107 strikeouts and 57 walks. His 2.0 wins above replacement mark ranks among the better figures for National League starters.

Over three seasons in San Francisco, Ray has compiled a 24-16 record and a 3.54 ERA. He is scheduled to become a free agent after the current campaign, a detail that could make him more attainable for clubs seeking temporary rotation help without long-term salary commitments.

The Astros’ recent form has placed them in position to consider such an addition. After dropping two of the first three games against the Texas Rangers at home this weekend, Houston still held a 1.5-game lead in the American League West. The club’s turnaround mirrors the surge seen by the Boston Red Sox, who went 21-4 in July and remained in the thick of the AL East race.
