The Houston Astros narrowly missed the MLB playoffs in 2025, ending a run of eight consecutive seasons where the team made the postseason. After falling short, questions have begun to rise about whether the dynasty is over, a stretch that saw Houston capture World Series titles in 2017 and 2021.
Through it all has been second baseman Jose Altuve, who just finished playing in his 15th season with the organization.
The 35-year-old veteran appeared in 155 games and still put up respectable numbers for Houston, posting a .265 batting average, .329 on-base percentage, .771 OPS, 26 home runs and 77 RBIs despite being past the physical prime of his career.
As Altuve enters the offseason hoping to continue being a plus player for the Astros, news emerged that he underwent right foot surgery on Monday.
“Astros second baseman Jose Altuve, who was bothered by a sore right foot in the final two weeks of the regular season, underwent a minor skin aspiration Monday, a source told MLB.com. He will be ready for the start of Spring Training,” reported Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.

“Altuve had a procedure to remove fluid from a wound between his fourth and fifth toes on his right foot, the source said. He was pulled from the Astros' Sept. 13 game against the Braves with right foot discomfort and didn't play the following day. He played through the foot discomfort the rest of the season before sitting out the final day after the Astros were eliminated,” McTaggart continued.
The good news for Houston and Altuve is that he will be ready for Spring Training, and the hope is that he makes a full recovery. Although Houston came up short in its playoff push, Altuve clearly put his body on the line to give the team a chance.
What is most impressive is that Altuve’s offensive numbers were excellent over his final six games of the year while playing through the injury. He posted a .353 batting average, .500 on-base percentage and .971 OPS over his final 22 plate appearances.
Altuve has nothing left to prove in his MLB career. Aside from winning two championships and contributing to the team's overall success, he earned AL MVP honors in 2017, captured three batting titles, collected seven Silver Slugger awards and was selected to nine All-Star Games. He will look to lead the Astros back to the postseason in 2026, but for now, his focus remains on recovery.
