Astros Make Final Decision on Pursuit of Yankees’ DJ LeMahieu

The Houston Astros are reportedly out on DJ LeMahieu.

Despite recent speculation linking the former New York Yankees infielder to Houston, Astros insider Will Kunkel shut the door on that possibility on Saturday. “The Astros are NOT pursuing former Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu, per source,” Kunkel reported.

LeMahieu, 36, became a free agent this week after being released by the Yankees, ending a seven-year run in New York. Known for his steady glove and professional approach at the plate, LeMahieu was seen as a possible fit for the Astros, who could have used veteran infield depth.

But ultimately, Houston opted not to pursue the two-time batting champ. It’s unclear whether that decision was based on performance, health, or roster fit. LeMahieu has been limited to 45 games this season, hitting .266 with two home runs and a .674 OPS. He’s also battled a string of lower-body injuries in recent years, including a calf strain this spring and chronic hip issues.

While the Astros are out, LeMahieu remains on the radar for other clubs. Jon Morosi of MLB Network suggested the Seattle Mariners could be a logical landing spot, especially given their need for a right-handed bat to complement their current infield mix.

LeMahieu is still owed roughly $22 million from the Yankees, who designated him for assignment earlier this week. General manager Brian Cashman called the move “best for the roster configuration going forward,” citing LeMahieu’s declining production and limited defensive mobility as factors.

Teammates like Aaron Judge were quick to express their admiration for LeMahieu, with Judge calling him a “gamer” who set a high standard for professionalism in the Yankees’ clubhouse.

Though his days as a regular contributor may be behind him, LeMahieu still brings experience and versatility--just not in Houston.
