Astros Offense Is on Fire Entering April, and They’re Just Getting Started

The Houston Astros have scored 37 runs over their four-game win streak, and the offense is just getting started. The 39 runs scored over the first six games (most teams have played five) are the most in baseball.

Not only are the Astros scoring runs at a high rate, but they also lead baseball with a .394 team OBP, are second in slugging percentage, and first in doubles, by a long shot. They're top three in a plethora of other offensive statistical categories to begin the season.

Sure, the extra game that most teams haven't played yet helps, but these numbers are far and away better than the league. Entering Wednesday's rubber match against Boston, Houston hasn't allowed an opposing starter to pitch more than five innings since Opening Day.

Over the last three games, the Astros have scored at least four runs against the starters, and worked a total of nine walks. Yordan Alvarez has been instrumental in the elite start to the season. He's put together a 1.441 OPS with three bombs and six RBI, all of which lead the team.

After Jose Altuve's rough spring, he's jumped on the ball to begin the year. His 1.293 OPS and two homers are second on the team. Best of all, Altuve has walked eight times, which is second in the league. The putrid spring he pieced together wasn't out of the ordinary, but it was slightly concerning for the aging legend.

He posted a .376 OPS with just two walks over 39 at-bats, but clearly hasn't wavered.

Carlos Correa Has Been an Under-the-Radar Star Through the First Six Games

Carlos Correa has had an under-the-radar performance so far. He is third on the team in RBI and tied for second in hits. The 31-year-old has just one extra-base hit, but he's been on base 10 times and has been a part of eight runs scored in total.

Houston will have its work cut out for it on Wednesday to continue this hot-hitting trend. The Astros must get through hard-throwing lefty Garrett Crochet to complete the three-game sweep.

Crochet threw six scoreless innings against the Cincinnati Reds on Opening Day. He allowed just three hits and struck out eight in the win. Crochet has a 6.28 lifetime ERA against the Astros, but has struck out 22 over 14.1 innings.

His last outing at Daikin Park came last August when he allowed five runs on seven hits over four innings. He was awarded the loss in Houston's 7-6 victory.
