The Athletics have added outfielder Johnathan Rodríguez after losing another key piece of their young core to a season-ending injury.
The club announced that Tyler Soderstrom will undergo surgery on his left hip after a chronic impingement failed to improve. Soderstrom visited a specialized orthopedic hip clinic in Los Angeles before the decision was made to proceed with the procedure Friday.
The Athletics transferred Soderstrom to the 60-day injured list, opening a spot on the 40-man roster for Rodríguez, whom the club claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Soderstrom’s injury is another major blow for an Athletics team already dealing with the loss of Jacob Wilson. The 24-year-old had returned from his first injured-list stint for the same hip issue on July 8 but continued playing through the problem.
The A’s have claimed OF Johnathan Rodriguez off waivers from the Pirates and optioned him to Triple-A Las Vegas. To make room on the 40-man roster, OF Tyler Soderstrom has been transferred to the 60-day IL.

The issue eventually worsened following the Athletics’ Aug. 9 game in Boston, leading to the latest shutdown. Soderstrom finishes his season after appearing in 109 games and posting a .245/.338/.472 slash line with 19 home runs and 56 RBIs.
His absence leaves another significant hole in the Athletics lineup. Soderstrom had also entered the latest development on an 11-game hitting streak before being placed on the injured list.
Rodríguez, meanwhile, provides the Athletics with additional organizational depth. The 26-year-old outfielder was claimed after Pittsburgh placed him on waivers and has been optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Rodríguez has moved through several organizations this season after previously being traded from the Cleveland Guardians to the Baltimore Orioles before eventually reaching Pittsburgh.
The Athletics are now dealing with a rapidly growing list of injuries among their young offensive core. Brent Rooker, Shea Langeliers and Nick Kurtz have also dealt with season-ending injuries or surgeries.
For Soderstrom, the immediate priority is completing the hip procedure and recovery. With Wilson also sidelined, the Athletics will now turn their attention toward getting both foundational players healthy for the 2027 season.
